Three key undersea cables connecting the west coast of Africa with Europe were simultaneously cut, affecting international communications between the southern countries of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Europe, according to an announcement by telecommunications operator Angola Cables.
According to THX, the announcement stated that the affected cables include WACS, SAT3 and ACE. The cable break is likely to have occurred about 150km from the mouth of the Congo River and may have been caused by the river's strong currents.
Details and the cause of the fiber optic cable break are not yet clear. Angola's telecommunications operator also said that the company managing the related submarine fiber optic cable systems is working to repair the broken sections.
Communications are expected to be restored in early September. As a result of the incident, Internet access in Angola will be slightly reduced. Angola Cables plans to connect Angola's Internet to the networks of Brazil and the United States.
