Applying science and technology to production also contributes to promoting value chain linkage, forming large-scale, modern closed production areas, to create products that meet market requirements.
Quang Ngai Seed Center (Department of Agriculture and Environment) is a leading unit in researching, selecting, supplying and producing rice varieties in the province as well as the Central Highlands region. In particular, the center has 4 rice varieties that have been exclusively recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), including: DH815-6, QNg13, QNg128 and Thien Huong (QNg6). These are varieties researched, selected and produced by Duc Hiep Agricultural Seed Station, under Quang Ngai Seed Center, and are popular in the Central Highlands market.
Staff of Duc Hiep Agricultural Seed Station monitor and evaluate the characteristics of rice varieties being researched and created by the unit. |
Mr. Huynh The, in Tan Binh residential group, Pho Minh ward (Duc Pho town) said that the varieties of Duc Hiep Agricultural Seed Station have high yield and stable rice quality. Therefore, for decades, every year I have sown 3 - 4 sao of DH815-6 variety, because this rice variety is easy to cultivate and produces rice that is favored by vermicelli makers and purchased at high prices. As for Thien Huong rice variety, the rice is fragrant and delicious, purchased by many agents and rice shops, so I often sow 4 - 5 sao in the winter-spring crop.
Trusted by farmers, Quang Ngai Seed Center supplies 500 tons of seeds to the market each year, but still cannot meet demand. Nguyen Thi Le Quyen, Deputy Head of Duc Hiep Seed Station, said that, recognizing that seeds play an important and core role in agricultural production, we constantly research, select, and improve quality rice varieties that are suitable for soil conditions in each region and locality. In addition, the weather conditions change abnormally, leading to an increasing demand for new rice varieties that can adapt to climate change. Therefore, in addition to continuing to monitor the characteristics of 4 exclusive rice varieties, the center recently sent 2 samples of DH98 and DH99-81 rice varieties to the Center for Testing and Testing of Seeds and Crop Products in the Central Region (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) to test the cultivation and use value of the varieties (VCU).
One of the difficulties of plant seed production enterprises is limited resources, the use of traditional breeding methods leads to a long basic research time. For example, the rice varieties of Quang Ngai Seed Center took more than 10 years of research, selection and evaluation to be recognized as exclusive, from which they were allowed to be produced and supplied en masse in the Central - Central Highlands region.
Director of Quang Ngai Seed Center Trinh Luong Thom said that the center operates in the agricultural sector, requiring large investment costs but with high risks, while cooperation with research institutes faces many difficulties and obstacles; especially issues related to financial mechanisms, land, assets, equipment for research, breeding, production, etc. In addition, machinery and equipment and infrastructure are both lacking and weak, so production activities only stop at research and making seeds, but have not yet processed into final products to increase the value of rice. Therefore, the center hopes that the authorities will remove bottlenecks through effective implementation of policies, especially Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW dated December 22, 2024 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation and national digital transformation.
According to Dr. Vu Van Khue - Deputy Director of the South Central Coast Agricultural Science and Technology Institute, science and technology do not stop at increasing productivity and output but create added value through the integration of multiple values to reduce production costs and increase competitive advantages for products. In the agricultural sector, research and application of science and technology in seed production is one of the three key factors (along with the production process and post-harvest preservation) that need to be paid attention to and focused on. Because good seed sets not only increase productivity and income for farmers, but also help businesses expand market share, improve production and business efficiency through post-processed products.
Identifying the important role of science and technology in the new period, the Department of Agriculture and Environment also focuses on building action plans and programs; in which it focuses on raising awareness, renewing thinking, investing in infrastructure, attracting investors associated with the use of high-quality human resources...
Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Ho Trong Phuong emphasized that, in parallel with reviewing all specific goals and tasks, the department also promotes digital transformation and application of science and technology, aiming to improve the efficiency of industry and sector management in the operations of affiliated agencies and units. The department researches and advises the province to invest in facilities and equipment systems serving research and experiments of large-scale units instead of small-scale investments for each unit as before. Thereby, promoting the commercialization of science and technology products, putting the results of the research process into practice, effectively serving the cause of local economic and social development. In addition, the department also builds and advises competent agencies to issue mechanisms and resources to train and form a team of high-quality young human resources, serving the cause of sustainable science and technology development.
