From the above figures, it can be seen that tourism contributes a significant amount of revenue to the economy. However, how to increase revenue per visitor, thereby increasing tourism revenue even more, is still a difficult problem. The issue of tourism revenue not being commensurate with the number of visitors to Quang Nam has been mentioned. In 2019, revenue per visitor in Quang Nam was only about 1.8 million VND; meanwhile, Da Nang reached more than 3.5 million VND.
A tourism business located in the province said that there are tourists who travel mainly to check-in and spend little, so the revenue per customer is not high.
Regarding check-in, it can be seen that in recent years, tourism is not simply a journey of discovery but also associated with “check-in culture”. There are people who travel to famous destinations mainly to take photos to show off on social networks and then leave without spending much time experiencing; exploring further or using other services.
It is undeniable that sparkling photos and videos with beautiful angles when shared on social networks have helped many destinations become famous. This strong spread helps some destinations attract a large number of tourists without spending too much on promotion. However, traveling just to check-in also poses a problem, if tourists only come to take photos without eating or staying overnight, then tourism workers and local people do not benefit much from the number of tourists.
For tourism to bring sustainable value, tourists need to have a balance between "check-in" tourism and experiential tourism, learning to "live slowly" when traveling.
Instead of just passing through a destination to take a few nice photos, taking the time to learn about the culture, people, and record the stories behind each place you visit; enjoying the cuisine, and participating in experiences will add more excitement to your trip.
Locals and tourism operators also need to build more attractive products; create more interesting experiences at destinations. Nature discovery tours, cooking classes, cultural exchanges… can make tourists stay longer and spend more.
As technology and social networks develop, check-in tourism is a powerful promotional tool for destinations. But if it stops there, tourism only brings superficial value.
Tourism needs to aim for long-term values, where visitors not only bring back beautiful photos but also explore deeply, experience, and save memorable memories; contribute positively to the locality, not because of following temporary trends.
