Having admired the white-covered ice scene at O Quy Ho Pass and Ngu Chi Son Peak a few years ago, Mr. Nguyen Trong Cung (in Thai Binh) was lucky to continue his successful ice hunting at Lao Than Peak (2,860m high, in Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province) on January 11, thanks to closely monitoring the weather.
“When I heard about the cold front in the North, I decided to spend the weekend in Lao Cai hunting for ice. Luckily, I got to experience this unique weather phenomenon again and took photos of the amazing moments of creation and nature,” Cung shared.
Having had many experiences climbing mountains, Mr. Cung did not encounter many obstacles in conquering Lao Than peak on a cold, icy day.
According to him, the only obstacle is the sharp drop in temperature that makes his body cold and his limbs numb.
To hunt for ice on Lao Than peak, Mr. Cung traveled from Sa Pa to Y Ty by bus for 3 hours. Then, he continued walking for 2 hours.
At the time he visited, the temperature in the area was only about 4-5 degrees Celsius, and ice on tree branches did not melt all day.
“Although it was very cold and the journey was a bit more difficult, in return, I got to admire a different beauty of Vietnam's high mountains in winter,” the photographer and traditional medicine doctor added.
Similar to Mr. Cung, Kieu Tung Lam (in Hanoi) was also lucky to encounter the ice phenomenon during a tour leading a group of tourists to experience the peak at Ky Quan San (Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province).
“After checking the weather forecast, I guessed that there would be ice on Ky Quan San peak, but I didn’t know to what extent. Luckily, my group and I were able to see the most beautiful ice here because just one day later, the ice had melted,” Lam said.
The young male tour guide said that when ice appears, climbing becomes more difficult, especially after the ice melts, the road becomes slippery.
The most important thing for tourists when climbing mountains at this time is to ensure that the body is kept as warm as possible, and prioritize using soft-soled shoes with good grip.
“In cold weather, tourists need to prepare multi-purpose scarves, gloves, mittens, thermal clothing, etc. In particular, you should use a specialized raincoat to keep warm more effectively,” Lam said.

Although climbing in icy conditions is more difficult, the 9X and the group of tourists still felt the trip was worth it, because they were able to see with their own eyes the crystal-white ice-covered scenery on the grass and tree branches.
“Near the top of Ky Quan San, there is an area popularly known as cow hill (because locals often graze cows). There is an icy road here that makes anyone who sets foot on it exclaim in amazement and then enjoy the beauty of the mountains and forests in winter.
This is really an interesting experience, mixed with a bit of luck because not everyone can always encounter this ice phenomenon," Lam added.
It is forecasted that in the coming days, the cold air will continue to strengthen, with the possibility of frost or frost appearing in the high mountainous areas of the North and North Central regions such as: Sa Pa, Y Ty (Lao Cai); Phja Oac (Cao Bang); Tram Tau, Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai) ...
According to the 9X's suggestion, tourists can proactively plan an ice hunting trip, equipping themselves with the necessary items to have an impressive experience, as beautiful as abroad without having to go far.
