Proposing 3 localities to trace the origin of alcohol that caused 6 people to be hospitalized

Regarding 6 cases of emergency hospitalization, including 1 death suspected of alcohol poisoning, on April 1, the Food Safety Department (Ministry of Health) issued an official dispatch requesting relevant units to urgently investigate, handle and strengthen the work of preventing and combating alcohol poisoning.

According to the Food Safety Department, the unit has received information about 6 cases of tourists in Ninh Thuan being hospitalized at Cho Ray Hospital, suspected of methanol poisoning due to drinking KT brand fruit wine, produced in Tien Giang.

The Food Safety Department has requested the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to direct medical facilities to actively treat and ensure the health of patients; at the same time, it requested to investigate the patients' eating history, collect test results and send them to the Tien Giang Department of Health for coordinated investigation.

The Ninh Thuan Provincial Department of Health was tasked with investigating the food establishments related to the patient to provide information and coordinate with the Tien Giang Department of Health to determine the cause of the food poisoning. The authorities were also required to investigate and strictly handle food safety violations (if any) and publicize the results to warn the community.

Tien Giang Department of Health, together with Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety and Ninh Thuan Department of Health, will coordinate to determine the cause of food poisoning. Tien Giang authorities will also trace the origin of alcohol products suspected of causing poisoning, stop the circulation of the products and strictly handle food safety violations (if any).

The Food Safety Department also requested units to urgently strengthen inspection, examination and supervision of food safety for alcohol production and trading establishments, especially small establishments and craft alcohol breweries. The goal is to promptly prevent unsafe, unknown origin, unlabeled alcohol that poses a risk to consumers' health.

In addition, the Department also requires strengthening communication work, guiding people to raise awareness and responsibility for ensuring food safety in alcohol production and trading. People need to avoid alcohol abuse, ensure safety when choosing and using alcohol, absolutely do not use strange animals or plants of unknown origin to soak in alcohol, as well as not drink alcohol of unknown origin or without labels.
