Angelo Kourkafas, senior investment strategist at Edward Jones, said the April 2 announcement was “likely not a one-off event.” While it was an important milestone, it ultimately did not resolve all the underlying uncertainties that remain.

Market reaction on April 2 will depend heavily on the timing of future tariffs, especially sectoral tariffs, and how quickly other countries can retaliate with reciprocal tariffs, said Matthew Aks, senior strategist at Evercore ISI.

Investors are concerned that tariffs will increase the risk of long-term damage to the U.S. economy. U.S. consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in more than four years in March, as investors grew increasingly worried about a recession and higher inflation due to tariffs.
