Officials are considering a project to build the tallest new skyscraper in the United States, Interesting Engineering reported on April 19. The new building, Legends Tower, will not be located in crowded New York City or Chicago but in Oklahoma City, with a population of only about 700,000. The project will be located in a parking lot near railroad tracks and warehouses.

Legends Tower was originally planned to be the second tallest building in the United States. But the designers and developers decided to go further. The new plan calls for the building to be 1,907 feet (581 m) tall, to commemorate the year Oklahoma became the 46th state of the United States. This would make Legends Tower about 130 feet taller than the current tallest skyscraper in the United States, One World Trade Center in New York City. The building would be the sixth tallest building in the world, behind China's Ping An International Finance Center.

Surrounding the main skyscraper, Legends Tower, are three smaller buildings, each 105 meters tall. Legends Tower is expected to house about 1,750 residential apartments and a luxury hotel. The estimated cost of the project, including structures such as a water tank and a boardwalk, is $1.6 billion.

But the new project also faces some problems. Building so high in a city with a population of less than 1 million people doesn’t seem to make much financial sense. Another concern raised at a city planning meeting was the weather.

Oklahoma City is prone to tornadoes, making it difficult to build a building as tall as Legends Tower. To address this, Rob Budetti, manager at AO, the company responsible for designing Legends Tower, said engineers will build a thick concrete core around the elevator shaft to ensure stability. The building’s windows will also be able to withstand the force of a tornado without breaking. Budetti even said it would be one of the safest places for people to be in the event of a tornado.

The Oklahoma City Planning Commission has approved the project, though there are still a few hurdles, including a city meeting on June 4. If all goes well, developer Scot Matteson hopes to break ground in July of this year.
