Mr. Trump described on social media that he was shot "past his ear," according to information updated by the New York Times at 10:37 p.m. on July 13 (local time) about the shooting that injured the former President.

At the same time, the White House said that US President Joe Biden spoke with Mr. Trump after the shooting.

According to the New York Times, Mr. Trump was taken to the hospital on July 13 after being shot at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The shooting left one event attendee and the gunman dead, and two other spectators seriously injured, the Secret Service said in a statement.

Mr Trump was escorted off the stage bleeding around his ear.

President Biden issued a brief televised statement following the incident, condemning the violence as “sickening.”

Biden also spoke with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Butler Mayor Bob Dandoy, according to CNN.

"The President will return to Washington, DC tonight. Tomorrow morning at the White House, he will receive an updated briefing from homeland security and law enforcement officials (on the incident)," CNN quoted a White House official as saying in a statement.

The New York Times, citing two law enforcement officials, said the shooting suspect has not yet been identified, but authorities recovered an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle at the scene from a dead man they believe was the gunman.

In his social media post, Mr Trump thanked law enforcement officials for their quick response to the shooting and offered his condolences to the family of the dead concertgoer.

"I knew something was wrong when I heard the whistling, gunshot, and immediately felt the bullet tear through my skin. There was a lot of blood, so I realized what was happening," Trump wrote.

The Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies have yet to publicly confirm that Mr Trump was shot in the ear, saying only that there had been a shooting and that the former President was “safe”.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson vowed to conduct a "full investigation" into the shooting in a statement on X on July 13.

"The American people deserve to know the truth. We will ask Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other officials from DHS and the FBI to appear before our committees as soon as possible," Johnson said.

The shooting of former President Trump is being investigated as an assassination, according to law enforcement officials.

Rep. Daniel Meuser of Pennsylvania told CNN he was sitting in the front row of Trump's rally with Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick and Rep. Mike Kelly when chaos ensued.

“People started screaming, calling for doctors,” said Mr Meuser, saying it all started out like a routine event and “the next thing… was a flash bang.”

Mr Meuser added that “a lot of people were very frightened” but “they calmed down after a short while, especially when Mr Trump stood up and gave a thumbs up.
