Strong earthquake in Japan, Northeast Asia deals with tsunami

The strongest earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale, occurring at 4:10 p.m. on January 1 (local time).

According to NHK, the JMA has issued a tsunami warning for Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui and Hyogo prefectures, as well as a major tsunami warning (higher than 3 meters) for Ishikawa prefecture. The earthquake caused a tsunami of more than 1.2 meters high in Wajima City, Ishikawa prefecture on the afternoon of January 1.

According to TASS, Russia has issued a tsunami warning for the cities of Vladivostok and Nakhodka in the country's Far East. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has also issued a tsunami warning, while South Korea has recorded 45 cm high tsunami waves, according to Reuters.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said authorities were still assessing the extent of the damage and residents should be prepared for any further tremors. NHK broadcast images of a collapsed building in a cloud of dust in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and people in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, cowering under tables as their houses shook. The quake also shook buildings in Tokyo, on Japan's east coast.

Hokuriku Electric Power Co. said more than 36,000 households were without power in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures. High-speed rail service to Ishikawa was suspended, while telecom operators Softbank and KDDI reported disruptions to phone and internet services in Ishikawa and Niigata.

Due to the earthquake, four ANA flights were forced to turn back while en route to Toyama and Ishikawa, while Japan Airlines canceled most flights to Niigata and Ishikawa for the rest of January 1, according to TV Asahi.

The Japan Nuclear Regulation Authority said on the evening of January 1 that no abnormalities had been confirmed at nuclear power plants along Japan's west coast, including five reactors operating at Kansai Electric Power Company's Ohi and Takahama plants in Fukui Prefecture. The agency also said that Hokuriku's Shika plant in Ishikawa, which was closest to the epicenter, had suspended operations of two reactors before the quake for routine inspections and had not detected any post-seismic effects.
