According to the Elo scoring formula of the International Football Federation (FIFA), the Vietnamese team was deducted 29.73 points and is likely to fall to 99th place in the world. This result comes after two losses to Japan (minus 6.47 points) and Indonesia (minus 23.26 points).
In the final round, the Vietnamese team will meet the Iraqi team. Coach Philippe Troussier and his team will be awarded 23.67 points if they win and 6.17 points if they draw. If they lose, the Vietnamese team will be deducted 11.33 points and will likely be eliminated from the world's top 100.
The teams ranked from 100 to 104 are less than 10 points behind the Vietnamese team. Since November 2018, the Vietnamese team has always been in the top 100 on the FIFA rankings.
Vietnam team is at risk of falling out of the world top 100.
Vietnam's ranking has been affected a lot in recent months. Since October 2023, the team has only won one match against the Philippines, the rest are losses against China, South Korea, Iraq, Japan and Indonesia. The two losses against Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan do not count as they were closed friendlies.
The defeat against Indonesia also eliminated the Vietnamese team from the 2023 Asian Cup. Quang Hai and his teammates are at the bottom of the table with 0 points, 3 points behind Japan and Indonesia, and also have a poor head-to-head record against these two opponents.
" In football there are always winners and losers. When you have tried your best, there is nothing to regret or bow your head. I am ready to accept defeat. I have no regrets. We tried our best against a strong opponent ," coach Philippe Troussier shared after the match.
Center back Bui Hoang Viet Anh also shared the same sentiment. " I am really sad and regretful. The team played well in the second half but did not score. The goal of the Vietnamese team was 3 points but we did not achieve the goal. The whole team must try hard in the final match ," Bui Hoang Viet Anh expressed.
This is the first time the Vietnamese team has been eliminated from the group stage of the Asian Cup. In the previous two appearances (2007 and 2019), the team reached the quarter-finals.
The Vietnamese team will play their final match against Iraq on January 24. This match is a formality for the Vietnamese team as they no longer have a chance to advance. However, coach Troussier wants his players to focus and strive for the best results.
