More than 62% of Vietnamese people taking IELTS in 2022 are between the ages of 16 and 22, four times more than in 2018.
The report on foreign language teaching and learning in Vietnam in 2023, announced by the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences and the Management Board of the National Foreign Language Project on the morning of December 27, stated that the age of Vietnamese people taking the IELTS test is getting younger.
Specifically, in 2018, more than 50% of IELTS test takers were over 23 years old. Only nearly 1.5% of IELTS test takers were between 16-18 years old, more than 13% were in the 19-22 age group.
After 5 years, the proportion of students aged 16-22 in the total number of IELTS test takers increased to 62%. In particular, the 16-18 age group accounted for 30%, a 20-fold increase compared to 2018; the 19-22 age group increased more than twice; and the over-23 age group decreased by more than half, from nearly 52 to 20%.
IELTS is an international English proficiency certificate, accepted by more than 11,000 training institutions and organizations worldwide.
Since 2017, the Ministry of Education and Training has exempted candidates from the high school graduation exam and calculated the 10th grade foreign language score for candidates with an IELTS certificate of 4.0 or higher or equivalent. In 2021, more than 28,600 candidates were in this category, in 2022 it increased to more than 35,000 and this year nearly 47,000 students.
In addition, dozens of universities consider candidates with IELTS certificates and equivalent. These are the reasons why the group of candidates in this age group is increasing.
Experts say that Vietnamese students' English proficiency has improved significantly, especially in recent years.
According to data on the IELTS homepage, the average score of Vietnamese people in 2022 is 6.2/9.0, ranking 23rd out of 40 countries that hold the IELTS exam, on par with South Korea, Pakistan and India. Also in this year, the average TOEFL score of Vietnamese people is 77/120, ranking 24th out of 30 countries and territories in Asia.
In both exams, Vietnamese students showed strength in Reading and Listening skills, and had difficulty with Speaking skills with 14/30 TOEFL points and 5.8/9.0 IELTS.
"Successful language learning is not simply about learning and explaining grammar concepts or vocabulary meanings, but learning to communicate effectively," experts say. They expect that the 2018 general education program with its reform goals and focus on developing students' abilities and qualities can improve their foreign language learning results.
