SOLDIERS HELP PEOPLE GROW CLEAN VEGETABLES

On a land area of thousands of square meters in Abanh 1 village (Tr'Hy commune, Tay Giang district, Quang Nam), which used to be just a steep hill with trees and weeds growing wildly, a green vegetable garden of all kinds has gradually formed. To have the green shoots that are gradually sprouting in this landslide area, it is impossible not to mention the contribution of effort and sweat of the soldiers of Tr'Hy Border Post. This is considered a model vegetable garden to help the Co Tu people have more livelihoods.

Soldiers help people level the ground to grow clean vegetables

Mr. Le Hoang Linh, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tr'Hy commune, said that the border guards' plan to clear the mountain and open a vegetable garden of nearly 7,000 m2 came from a cooperation project between a group of businesses from Hoi An and the commune. Previously, a business had conducted a survey and worked with Tr'Hy commune on a project to join hands with Co Tu farmers to grow clean vegetables. At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding between the commune and the businesses. Tr'Hy commune will select the site and select 30 representative households to participate in the project of growing vegetables, squash, fruits, etc. The businesses will be responsible for technical coordination, providing seeds, and instructing on methods. All agricultural products produced will be purchased and brought to luxury accommodation areas in Hoi An and Da Nang City for consumption.

We have lived together, eaten together, and spoken the same language for generations, so whenever the people need us, we are there. We will do it first, then calculate and expand it, and guide the Co Tu people step by step to do it together. Hopefully, through this project, we will change the mindset of small-scale farming, aiming for large quantities with systematic standards.

Captain Le Huu Nam, Deputy Chief of Tr'Hy Border Guard Station

According to Mr. Linh, in Tay Giang, there have been many farm models in which businesses cooperate with farmers, but those projects have not achieved the desired results. However, he believes that when businesses go directly to the border area, working with farmers from planting, techniques to consuming agricultural output, the project will certainly be successful. "I hope the goal of the project is not only to create livelihoods for people but also to further develop the habit of large-scale production for people, increase income and improve livelihoods," said Mr. Linh.

Captain Le Huu Nam, Deputy Head of Tr'Hy Border Guard Station, shared: When they learned that a business came to the Tay Giang border area to order clean vegetables, soldiers at Tr'Hy Border Guard Station volunteered to level the hills and guide the Co Tu people to grow vegetables. To have the flat land like today, the soldiers of the unit did not hesitate to carry hoes, shovels... to rake the soil and level the ground.

"We have been eating, living and speaking the same language for generations, so whenever people need us, we are there. We will do it first, then calculate and expand, and guide the Co Tu people step by step to do it together. Hopefully, through this project, we will change the mindset of small-scale farming, towards large quantities with systematic standards," said Captain Nam.

Border guards guide people to grow medicinal plants to achieve high productivity

ECONOMIC MODEL CREATES LEVERAGE FOR DEVELOPMENT

At the "fence" of the Fatherland, the presence of officers and soldiers of the Border Guard of Quang Nam province not only helps the border people feel secure in doing business and living, but also gives them the opportunity to develop their socio-economy, with many practical and effective support models. From growing fruit trees, raising livestock on farms, to developing medicinal plant gardens under the forest canopy, reclaiming rice fields... all bear the mark of the border guards.

Leading us to the village's rice fields right on the concrete road, old man Blup Du (in Dac Ooc village, La Dee commune, Nam Giang district, Quang Nam) talked a lot about the changes in the border area here. In his story, he kept on "complaining about the merits" of the border guards. Because, decades ago, with the help of the border guards, the people of this Nam Giang border area gradually abandoned slash-and-burn farming and started to approach a completely new method of production, which is wet rice farming.

Old Du said that every beginning is always full of difficulties. The proof of this saying is that in the beginning, when people switched to wet rice cultivation, they encountered many difficulties that made them worried and about to give up. Right at that time, the border guards organized groups to come to the village, helping people improve the land and plow, and at the same time bring water back to serve production. Not long after, the rice was green again, and the people were excited. "In that harvest season and many years after, the wet rice fields in this border area were always full of grain. To have the wet rice brand like today, we must mention the great companionship of the officers and soldiers of the border guards", old Du recalled.

Colonel Hoang Van Man, Political Commissar of the Quang Nam Provincial Border Guard Command, shared: "In recent times, many livelihood models have been formed from the military-civilian relationship, creating a lever for the development of the border community. We strive for each border post to have at least one new model to help people develop their economy, culture and society. On the basis of promoting the value of previous economic models, we will continue to research and build more practical models, suitable to the practical needs of the mountainous people, to support and encourage people to develop their economy, contributing with the border force to maintain national border security and sovereignty." (continued)

According to Colonel Hoang Van Man (Political Commissar of the Quang Nam Provincial Border Guard Command), in order to contribute to the localities in implementing the new rural construction program, in addition to participating in thousands of working days to help people in production, the border guards stationed in the area also directly repaired and renovated dozens of houses, repaired many traffic routes damaged by natural disasters, and guided people in caring for and harvesting crops...
