Statistics show that the total revenue of Vietnamese films this year reached 1,900 billion VND. However, the sales of works are not even, there are works that do not earn 100 million VND and suffer heavy losses.
According to statistics of Box Office Vietnam , Vietnamese box office has total revenue of about 1,900 billion VND, up 22% compared to 2023 (about 1,560 billion VND). Among them, Tran Thanh and Ly Hai exploded the Vietnamese box office with Tomorrow (over 551 billion VND) and Flip Side 7: A Wish (over 482 billion VND).
Ghost (127 billion VND) and Get rich with ghosts (128 billion VND) also joined the club of Vietnamese films worth hundreds of billions of VND when taking the horror theme.
Besides some works that were "successful" in theaters, a series of works failed miserably, failing to retain audiences due to disastrous quality and unattractive themes.
The movie could not earn 100 million VND, the movie asked the audience for help
Squad hot girl is the biggest loss-making film of 2024 with a revenue of 67.9 million VND. The above data was recorded after three weeks of release, marking the lowest revenue in history (along with Legend of King Dinh ).
Initial, Hot girl squad attracted attention because of the presence of People's Artist Hoang Dung. The audience is also waiting to see what the director can do with the cast introduced as coming from many Asian countries.
However, viewers were disappointed by the poor quality of the film, from content, special effects to dialogue. People's Artist Hoang Dung also appeared briefly, not as expected by the audience.
When contacted, director Vinh Khuong said: "I just want to remain silent", refusing to share about the lowest-grossing film of 2024.
Following the list of heavy loss movies in 2024 is Fragile flower. Before Hot girl squad in theaters, movies Mai Thu Huyen holds the “record” of the worst-grossing film of the year. There were days when Mai Thu Huyen’s film did not sell any tickets despite being released on the occasion of the 4/30/15 holiday. The film left theaters with a revenue of about 430 million VND.
At first, Mai Thu Huyen asked for help from the audience. She said that the movie with Maya and Duc Tien was placed in a bad time slot, making it difficult to reach the audience.
"I just hope that theaters can prioritize Vietnamese films in more favorable time slots in the first week of release, and then based on the audience's reception, they can fairly evaluate the film," she shared.
After Fragile flower Leaving the theater, Mai Thu Huyen said she would take the film to "conquer new lands and touch the hearts of audiences with beautiful souls."

Vietnamese movies suffer heavy losses due to poor quality
In addition to action-themed works set in the US that are not popular with audiences, the Vietnamese box office in 2024 witnessed a series of films with disastrous quality and had to leave theaters in losses, typically Murder on the 4th floor.
Film directed by Nguyen Huu Tuan, produced by Truong The Vinh and Luong Bich Huu They play a couple who babysit for their neighbor, which leads to many consequences.
Expected to bring a breath of fresh air, Murder on the 4th floor was criticized for having many flaws, some even rated the film as “challenging the patience of the audience”. The biggest limitation of Vietnamese films is still the awkward dialogue, not suitable for reality.
The acting of Truong The Vinh and Luong Bich Huu was limited, unable to carry the psychological development of the characters. In the end, the film left the theater with a dismal revenue of 1.99 billion VND, along with many complaints about the quality.
Vietnamese box office on the occasion of April 30 - May 1 has a disaster movie called B4S: Before love.
The film exploits the sexual affairs of young people and is labeled 18+. The film is ambitious to make money during the holidays but is The Price of Happiness and Flip Side 7: A Wish crushed. The film's bland, uninteresting content was not enough to attract audiences to buy tickets, and in the end it left the theater with a revenue of 3.8 billion VND.
Amidst a series of heavy losses in the market, Le Thanh Son is expected to help Vietnamese box office flourish with Claws. The project marks the return of the "hundred billion" director after 7 years since I'm not 18 yet.
In addition to "inflating" the cost of producing the monster for promotion, Claws became known to the audience thanks to the story "Le Thanh Son sues Kaity Nguyen".
However, the side factors could not save the film about a group of friends surviving in the forest, confronting a bear monster, starring Tuan Tran and Thao Tam. The audience said that the film's idea was not new, and the storytelling was not attractive.
With a revenue of 3.88 billion VND, the work marked the fall of two directors and actors with hundreds of billions, Le Thanh Son and Tuan Tran.
Other works that are destined to suffer heavy losses in 2024 include: The Heiress 2 (6.4 billion VND), Light up (3.4 billion VND) and The most beautiful summer (4.8 billion VND).
Among the series of low-grossing films, the most regrettable work is Coolies never cry. The film was shown in theaters with a revenue of about 740.8 million VND. Before being released in Vietnam, the work won the Best Debut Film award at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany, and the Best Feature Film in Competition at the Jeonju International Film Festival 2024, Asian Film Competition Excellence Award at Da Nang Asian Film Festival 2024...
Sharing about the situation of Vietnamese films winning international awards but not attracting Vietnamese audiences, People's Artist Minh Chau (the film's female lead) accepts the reality that Vietnamese audiences often do not like to watch art films as much as entertainment films.
“Art filmmakers should also get used to and accept the reality that it is difficult for their films to reach audiences. I just hope that audiences will pay attention to the art genre, giving more motivation to pure cinema filmmakers,” said People's Artist Minh Chau.
