What to do when a stranger gives you a gift? How to keep your distance to avoid being kidnapped?... are things parents should keep in mind when teaching their children.
Teach children to be alert in public places
Ms. Tran Thi Que Chi - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Educational Research and Training - noted: "Parents must proactively teach children skills to prevent and avoid kidnapping so that this becomes a life skill for children."

According to Ms. Chi, to teach children these skills, parents need to understand the tricks and subjects that can become child kidnappers.
"The main trick of child kidnappers is to take advantage of children's innocence and love of receiving gifts and presents.
The kidnappers can be strangers, relatives, or acquaintances. The purpose of kidnapping children is often to extort money, sell them to others, or sell them abroad...
Kidnappers can approach children while they are playing at supermarkets, playgrounds, parks, schools...", Ms. Chi said.
She stressed that parents need to teach their children such knowledge and regularly remind them to be vigilant about becoming targets for kidnappers when they are not around relatives, especially in public places.
8 things to remember to avoid being kidnapped
According to Ms. Chi, children need to be taught the following 8 things to be able to protect themselves when there are no adults around. Specifically:
1. Don't talk to strangers.
2. Do not accept gifts from strangers or other people without permission from an adult.
3. Keep a safe distance from strangers so that children can run away and scream for help from others.
4. Do not follow others without permission from parents or guardians.
5. When at home, children should not let strangers or other people into the house without the permission of an adult in the family.
6. Do not talk or connect with strangers online. Children should immediately report to their parents or guardians if a stranger initiates an online connection with them.
7. Seek help from the surrounding area and scream when feeling in danger. If danger is threatening and the child cannot scream, the child can seek help in other ways such as using signs and intentional actions to let people around know that the child is unsafe.
8. Remember the name and phone number of your parent or guardian.
Mastering the skill is the best way to protect children from kidnappers.
Ms. Tran Thi Que Chi commented that many cases of child kidnapping show the importance of teaching children skills to prevent the risk of being kidnapped. Children with proficient skills are the best way to protect their safety when they participate in social environments and communities.
