One of the notable annual science and technology (S&T) events in Vietnam is the announcement and awarding of the Golden Globe Science and Technology Awards.

According to information from the organizing committee, in 2023, there were 69 nominations for the award from 38 agencies, units, universities, research institutes, enterprises nationwide and Vietnamese embassies, Vietnamese Youth and Student Associations abroad. The award was organized by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in coordination with the Ministry of Science and Technology and awarded to 10 outstanding young scientists.

This is also the 20th anniversary of the Golden Globe Science and Technology Award and has always received attention from Party and Government leaders and scientists.

4 candidates are young scientists sponsored by VINIF Foundation

Through the evaluation rounds of the award council, the 10 winning candidates are young scientists with many achievements in research activities, such as being authors/co-authors of patents/utility solutions, high-quality international publications in the Q1 category, and domestic and international awards/medals.

Among them, 4 young scientists are key members of science and technology projects, or have received/are receiving doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships sponsored by Vingroup Innovation Foundation (VINIF). The award-winning research of these candidates is related to, or is a work/topic/project sponsored by VINIF.

This is one of the significant achievements of VINIF Fund, in the context that the State is taking steps to amend and supplement mechanisms and policies to promote the development of science and technology and innovation in the country. Specifically, Document No. 690 signed and issued by the Prime Minister also emphasizes investment and funding for science and technology activities under the fund mechanism.

Changing the research mindset of young scientists in Vietnam

The establishment of VINIF in 2018 was immediately voted by the Science and Technology Journalists Club as one of the 10 outstanding science and technology events of the year. The Foundation's postdoctoral scholarship program was evaluated by Science and Development Newspaper as one of the 5 science and technology events of 2021.

After 5 years of development, VINIF has accompanied and supported more than 3,000 scientists and training and research institutions in many cutting-edge science and technology projects; master's, doctoral and post-doctoral scholarships; pioneering training programs in the country on data science and artificial intelligence; many international and domestic conferences and events of great influence; unique cultural and historical projects and events.

With over 800 billion VND donated, VINIF is a private fund in Vietnam that has made positive and sustainable contributions to the development of science and technology, training and changing the research mindset of young scientists in Vietnam.

Dr. Le Dinh Anh, lecturer at the Institute of Aerospace Technology, University of Engineering and Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, is one of the winners with his research on improved blade profiles to increase torque and aerodynamic power for Savonius wind turbines. This research is in the field of environmental science and belongs to the system of research on high-performance vertical axis wind turbines for renewable energy production. Dr. Le Dinh Anh's topic "Research on high-performance vertical axis wind turbines for renewable energy production using numerical simulation" has also received a postdoctoral scholarship in 2022 from the VINIF Foundation.

"Developing renewable energy in general, wind energy in particular, can contribute to supporting social security such as providing electricity to poor households in mountainous areas, islands, and places that cannot access the electricity grid. Based on positive research, we have been implementing to manufacture a type of small-sized wind turbine, easy to manufacture, suitable for wind conditions in our country. The results of the project will not only be limited to publications in prestigious international journals in the industry, but also promise the possibility of application and technology transfer in the future", Dr. Le Dinh Anh shared.

In the field of medical technology, this year's Golden Globe Science and Technology Award honors Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy for his achievements in developing endoscopic thyroidectomy through the oral vestibule through the application of the technique in lateral neck lymph node dissection to treat thyroid cancer.

This is the research direction that the candidate has pursued and practiced at K Hospital for many years. An important topic in this research direction is "Research on the treatment results of thyroid cancer in children" which helped Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy receive doctoral scholarships from VINIF Foundation for 2 consecutive years (2020 and 2021). Currently, Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy is Deputy Head of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery, K Hospital.

This year's biotechnology field recognized the contributions of Dr. Ngo Ngoc Hai, Institute of Genome Research - VAST. Dr. Ngo Ngoc Hai's research focuses on assessing the impact of climate change on animals and reptiles, based on predictive algorithm models. This research proposes conservation measures and priority areas in Vietnam, identifying groups of species at high risk of extinction under the impact of climate change.

Dr. Ngo Ngoc Hai is also one of 90 candidates with outstanding research achievements receiving a postdoctoral scholarship in 2023 from VINIF with the topic "Assessing the impact of climate change on the ecosystem and genetic diversity of rare reptile species in the Northeastern border region of Vietnam".

"The meaning of protecting wild animals and their habitats is to balance the ecological environment, indirectly protecting human life. Wild animals are extremely valuable natural resources, contributing significantly to creating ecological balance. If the balance is lost, it will cause unpredictable consequences, and human living environment will be threatened," said Dr. Ngo Ngoc Hai.

The VAIPE project is a remarkable project that brought the 2023 Golden Globe Science and Technology Award to Dr. Pham Huy Hieu, in the information technology - digital transformation group. VAIPE is a smart healthcare monitoring and support system that applies artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things for Vietnamese people.

VAIPE is a smart healthcare solution that integrates advanced technologies in the field of artificial intelligence and data analysis, allowing the collection, management, and analysis of personal health data, helping to monitor health status, supporting early diagnosis of diseases, thereby improving public health. Dr. Pham Huy Hieu is the co-director of the project and currently holds the position of Deputy Director of the VinUni - Illinois Smart Health Research Center, VinUni University.

The Golden Globe Science and Technology Award was established in 2003, as an award from the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union for young talents in the fields of information technology - digital transformation - automation, medical technology, biotechnology, environmental technology, and new material technology.

The main criteria for the award are: candidates under 35 years old, with excellent achievements in study, research and work; have outstanding research works and scientific and technological solutions with high scientific value; have creative ideas that are widely applied in practice, bringing economic and social efficiency. The award council will evaluate and select nominations and submit to the Central Secretariat of the Youth Union to decide on the award list. To date, 204 young scientists have been honored.

Over 20 years of development, the award has attracted thousands of young Vietnamese talents from all over the country as well as young people studying, researching and working abroad. The award has become a place to discover and honor outstanding young scientists in key scientific fields of the country.

In addition to the awards, certificates, and badges from the organizers and sponsors, the awardees will be registered and have their personal profiles saved in the Vietnam Young Talent database system, introduced to participate in events, forums, and activities organized by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and ministries and branches, and will receive support and facilitation from the Center for Science, Technology, and Young Talent Development, the Vietnam Young Talent Support Fund, Youth Union organizations at all levels, and relevant ministries, departments, and branches in their studies, research, and work.
