Spain Former Barca player appeared in court for three consecutive weeks as required, while awaiting the outcome of his rape appeal.

On the morning of April 12, Alves and his lawyer Ines Guardiola appeared before the High Court of Justice in Catalonia, Spain. According to regulations, during the bail period, the former defender must appear in court every week to sign, thereby confirming that he is still under the court's jurisdiction and has not left Spain.

"You could see Alves' composure as he walked from the car into the courthouse," Mundo Deportivo reported.

On February 22, Alves was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison by a Barcelona court for raping a 23-year-old woman at a nightclub in Barcelona in late 2022. In addition, the former Barca and PSG defender was placed under legal supervision for an additional 5 years and was banned from contacting the victim for 9 years and 6 months.

According to Mundo Deportivo , Alves' lawyers have filed an appeal to the High Court of Justice of Catalonia and possibly to the Supreme Court. The former Barca and PSG player will face a long legal journey, which could last until early 2025.

Meanwhile, the victim's lawyer - Ester Garcia - said the sentence of 4 years and 6 months was too light and was upset with Alves' release on bail. "This sends the message that there is justice for the rich and that even if you are convicted, if you post bail you will not face criminal consequences. This is a very dangerous message for society," Garcia said last month, adding that his client was angry, frustrated and disappointed.

Alves is the second most successful player in football history with 43 collective titles, just one less than Lionel Messi, including one with Bahia Club (Brazil), five with Sevilla (Spain), 23 with Barca (Spain), two with Juventus (Italy), five with PSG (France), one with Sao Paulo (Brazil) and six with Brazilian teams.

Before being arrested, Alves was also with Brazil at the 2022 World Cup. In the match against Cameroon in the group stage, he entered the field and became the oldest player to play for the team at the World Cup at the age of 39 years and 210 days.
