BTO-World Environment Day on June 5, 2024 was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the theme "Land restoration, drought and desertification" to call on countries around the world to join hands towards the goals of land restoration, desertification and drought resistance, slowing down climate change, protecting nature, enhancing livelihoods and food security for billions of people around the world.
According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40% of the planet's land area is degraded, directly affecting half of the world's population, threatening about half of global GDP ($44 trillion). The frequency and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000, and without urgent action, droughts could affect more than three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.
In Binh Thuan, Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Phan Van Dang has just issued Official Dispatch No. 1844/UBND-KT in response to World Environment Day June 5, Action Month for the Environment in 2024. Accordingly, the province directed districts, towns, cities, departments and branches to focus on reviewing, classifying, and monitoring changes in soil quality; investigating and assessing polluted land areas and areas at risk of pollution to ensure that these areas must be zoned; developing and implementing a plan to treat, renovate and restore polluted soil environments according to regulations; taking measures to prevent and minimize desertification and drought in the area.
In addition, promote forest protection and development activities, effectively use land resources, develop livelihoods for people in areas at risk or of desertification; use advanced solutions to protect water resources and protect the land surface. At the same time, create conditions for people to participate in accessing information and techniques to prevent drought and desertification.
