Taiwan arrests suspect in murder of Vietnamese porridge shop owner

CNA reported on June 11 that police in New Taipei City (Taiwan) had just arrested a 51-year-old man suspected of shooting dead a Vietnamese porridge shop owner in Taipei's Beitou District the day before.

The suspect, surnamed Chau, was arrested while sleeping in a temple near the Linkou Power Plant in New Taipei City at around 2:20 a.m. on June 11. Police searched the suspect’s apartment in Sanchong District (New Taipei City) and discovered the weapon he used to commit the crime.

According to police in Beitou district, authorities learned of the incident at around 1:45 p.m. on June 10, after receiving information that people heard an explosion at a nearby porridge shop.

Upon arrival, police found a Vietnamese woman named Phan, the owner of the porridge shop, lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the chest. Authorities concluded that the victim died at around 2 p.m. the same day, after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was Mr. Chau, a delivery man and day laborer in Taipei. According to the police, the suspect began pursuing Ms. Phan after visiting the congee shop, but recently became upset because he suspected that she was having an affair.

On June 10, Chau entered the restaurant and exchanged a few words with Phan before shooting the victim, police said. After fleeing on a motorbike, he abandoned the bike and took a taxi to Lam Khau.

During the interrogation, the suspect admitted that he committed the crime because Ms. Phan had a "bad attitude" towards him when she came to eat about a month ago. He also said that he received the gun from a friend who has now passed away.

After questioning, police said they planned to hand Mr. Chau over to prosecutors for possible murder and gun control violations. Other factors in the case, including the motive, the true nature of the relationship between the perpetrator and the victim, and the origin of the gun, are still under investigation.
