Crowds of people and vehicles poured into the gateways of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on the last day of the holiday, causing local congestion.
On the afternoon of May 1, people from many provinces and cities began returning to Hanoi to work after a five-day holiday. From 2 p.m., a line of cars slowly moved from the Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway turnoff onto the elevated Ring Road 3 towards the city center.
On Do Muoi Street (connecting the expressway) towards Linh Dam and above the 3rd ring road, the number of vehicles increased compared to yesterday. Traffic congestion also occurred in front of Nuoc Ngam bus station, Ngoc Hoi street, Giap Bat bus station, and Giai Phong street.
Over the past two days, Highway Traffic Control Patrol Team No. 3 (Traffic Police Department) coordinated with Road Traffic Police Team No. 14 (Traffic Police Department, Hanoi City Police) to conduct remote traffic diversion to reduce congestion at the Phap Van - Cau Gie Highway intersection onto Do Muoi Street.
Inside Giap Bat bus station, people were carrying their belongings from their hometowns. Vu Van Que, 24, from Nam Dinh, said that travel was smooth despite congestion at some points such as the entrance to the Liem Tuyen intersection on the Ha Nam section of the highway or when entering the center of Hanoi.
People travel on Giai Phong Street, the southern gateway of Hanoi, where traffic is heavy.
Many people feel tired when traveling long distances.
According to the Traffic Police Department, on May 1, traffic will increase dramatically on highways and gateways leading to Hanoi. People traveling should follow the instructions of the authorities.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the traffic flow becomes more concentrated on gateway roads in the afternoon, but congestion only occurs at some intersections. Traffic jams do not last as long as on other holidays and Tet because a large number of people have returned to the city over the past few days.
On Highway 1 through Binh Chanh District, passenger cars continuously lined up in the direction from the western provinces back to the city. All the buses were full. Tens of thousands of people on motorbikes, with their belongings tied up, also poured into the city. "Although there was no traffic jam like usual, the hot weather made the journey very difficult," said Nguyen Hau, 40, from Dong Thap.
Meanwhile, at Cat Lai ferry, traffic through this area is not as congested as during previous holidays.
At around 6:30 p.m., vehicles from Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Dong Nai began to converge on the ferry to return to Ho Chi Minh City, causing a local traffic jam that lasted nearly a kilometer. The Youth Volunteer Force organized ticket sales from a distance as well as operated a maximum of 8 ferries to help people travel more quickly.
Mr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Volunteer Ferry Management Enterprise, said that the forecast of traffic volume to Ho Chi Minh City is about 70,000 passengers and there will be a lot of traffic on the evening of May 1. To proactively handle peak situations, all types of ferries from 60 to 200 tons are on standby to increase service when traffic increases suddenly.
In the East of Ho Chi Minh City, vehicles also gathered on the Long Thanh - Dau Giay highway, mostly 4-7 seater cars heading from Vung Tau back to the city.
An Phu intersection is locally congested from Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway towards the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
Civil servants and workers nationwide have just had 5 days off from April 27 to May 1 and will work on May 4 as a compensation. This is the first time in many years that the April 30-May 1 holidays have been swapped according to the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs.
The Labor Law stipulates 11 official holidays in a year including New Year's Day (1 day), Lunar New Year (5), Hung King's death anniversary (10/3 Lunar calendar) (1), Victory Day (4/30) (1), International Labor Day (5/1) (1), National Day (9/2) (2).
