On the afternoon of February 20, at the 21st session of the 10th term of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, 2021-2026, delegates approved the decision on investment policy for 4 gateway routes of Ho Chi Minh City, including upgrading and expanding National Highways 1, 13, 22 and the North-South axis, with a total investment of about 60,000 billion VND.
At the western gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, National Highway 1 (from Kinh Duong Vuong Street to the border of Long An province) will be invested in expanding to 10-12 lanes.
The project to expand National Highway 1 through Binh Tan and Binh Chanh districts is nearly 10km long, with a total investment of more than VND16,270 billion, of which the budget capital is more than VND9,611 billion, the remaining VND6,659 billion is mobilized by investors.
According to Dan Tri reporters, National Highway 1 at the western gateway of Ho Chi Minh City often experiences traffic jams, especially during rush hour or holidays.
Binh Dien Bridge will also be expanded to synchronize with the entire route. After the expansion, National Highway 1 through Binh Tan and Binh Chanh districts will have 10-12 lanes, reaching a width of 60m as planned.
At the Northwestern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, the project to upgrade and expand National Highway 22 (from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3) will also be implemented this year.
The project to upgrade and expand National Highway 22 has a total length of 8.7km passing through District 12 and Hoc Mon District with a total investment of VND10,451 billion.
According to records, there are many large and small parking lots and garages along Highway 22. The increasing demand for passenger and cargo transportation causes this route to be frequently overloaded, leading to traffic jams and accidents.
National Highway 22 is also the only route at the Northwest gateway connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Moc Bai International Border Gate (Tay Ninh Province), playing an important role in trade with ASEAN countries.
The North-South axis road upgrade project (from Nguyen Van Linh intersection to Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway) is 8.6km long, with a total investment of more than VND 9,894 billion, of which the budget capital is more than VND 4,679 billion, the rest is investor capital, and will be implemented from 2025 to 2028.
Once completed, the North-South axis road will have a 60m wide cross-section, a scale of 10 lanes, with additional appropriate infrastructure and technical works. The design speed of the road is 80km/h for the main route and 60km/h for the parallel roads on both sides.
The total land use area of the project is about 66.5 hectares. Of which, the area to be cleared is more than 2.2 hectares, residential land accounts for 0.91 hectares, agricultural land accounts for about 1.36 hectares.
The project to upgrade and expand 5.9km of National Highway 13 (from Binh Trieu Bridge to Vinh Binh Bridge) will be expanded to 60m with 10 lanes, of which 3.2km will be built as an elevated road with 4 lanes.
The project has a total investment of about 21,724 billion VND (budget capital of more than 14,700 billion VND, capital mobilized by investors is about 7,017 billion VND).
National Highway 13 is one of the main roads and an important gateway from Ho Chi Minh City to Binh Duong.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the above projects will apply smart traffic technology and automatic non-stop toll collection (closed toll collection according to length of use), thus ensuring fairness and convenience for service users.
