There was a time when he neglected his studies, but now this young man has become the valedictorian of the whole school and works at a large corporation.
That is the story of Nguyen Thanh Thuan, the valedictorian of Hoa Sen University in the graduation ceremony in early November.

The journey to become valedictorian

Recalling the story of many years ago, Thuan shared that he had quite good academic achievements from elementary school to middle school, being one of the top students in his class. However, when he entered high school, Thuan began to neglect his studies, his results declined and this continued until his first semester at university.

The young man confessed that during that time, he often skipped school and did not pay much attention to his studies. “When I first became a student, I often skipped school because I thought that I would be able to relax when I went to university. But starting from the second semester, I realized the problem and threw myself into studying to get my grades back,” Thuan said. And the biggest reason why Thuan was determined to focus on studying was his parents. “For me to go to school, my parents struggled a lot to find tuition. I entered the university thanks to each cake my mother sold and my father’s salary as a worker. My parents always cared about my studies, my mother always counted down the days until I graduated. My parents worked so hard without a single complaint, so why couldn’t I focus on studying? From then on, I started focusing on studying,” Thuan confided.

Around the end of his first year, Thuan began to re-learn how to study to complete his subjects in the best way and change his grades. In the first semester of his first year of university, Thuan only achieved an average score of 3.0, a fair score. Therefore, graduating with honors with a near-perfect score was a spectacular comeback for Thuan. “During that time, I faced a lot of pressure, there were days when I stayed up until 4 or 5 in the morning to study, many times looking at the computer screen I just wanted to cry. However, if I didn’t change, didn’t break through, I would stay the same, nothing outstanding. So I got up and continued to try,” Thuan confided. And all of Thuan’s efforts have paid off. The title of valedictorian of the whole school is like a gift Thuan gave to himself and his parents. Ms. Huynh Thi Ngoc Phuong (49 years old), Thuan’s mother, expressed: “Witnessing Thuan’s journey of maturity, I feel very happy and satisfied. When Thuan started university, I never put much emphasis on his studies. I also observed Thuan from afar and noticed that in his first year he did not really focus on studying. However, his final results after 4 years of university made me very happy.

Actively seek opportunities

To have more time for his internship, Thuan proactively arranged, planned and scheduled his studies. The male student crammed subjects to complete his program early. Although the amount of knowledge increased significantly, Thuan still achieved perfect scores in almost every subject. Talking about his study method, Thuan shared: “For me, studying a lot is not as good as studying enough. I always find important parts to focus on studying more. At the same time, I spend a lot of effort to allocate time, as well as research and arrange subjects in the most reasonable way”. Thanks to that effort, Thuan completed his studies 2 semesters early. Thanks to that, the time for his internship and practical work at the companies was up to 11 months. “The school stipulates that the cognitive internship period is 7 weeks and the graduation internship period is 15 weeks, but I crammed and finished the subjects early to have more time for my internship,” Thuan said.

Thuan shared that the long-term internship at companies helped him learn and develop a lot. “I got to work with many departments, observe how people operate and organize their work. Thanks to that, I learned a lot, not only professional skills but also soft skills,” Thuan shared. Currently, Thuan works as a senior specialist for the consumer research center at Masan Group. “This can be said to be a huge step forward for me,” Thuan said. Sharing the secret to impressing large companies during the interview process, Thuan shared: “I think the most important thing is initiative. This is what I think all large companies and corporations look for in a new graduate. I am always proactive in managing my time, planning my work and connecting with colleagues and leaders to make the work go as smoothly as possible. In addition to understanding the job you are about to do, you also need to understand what you want and what position you are suitable for. From his own story, Thuan confided: "We can completely turn things that we thought were impossible into possible. As long as we always believe in ourselves, everything can start over and have a new ending." Having taught Thuan in 3 subjects, Master Nguyen Vu Dieu Linh, lecturer of Digital Marketing, Hoa Sen University, commented: "In class, Thuan is always my top student. What I appreciate about Thuan is that he has the ability to create more creative and complete products from basic knowledge. Not only is Thuan good at his major, but he also has many other quite comprehensive soft skills. If Thuan continues to persistently pursue his goals, I believe that in the near future he will achieve certain achievements in the field of Marketing."
