“From the moment I put pen to paper to write the speech, I cried, and I also cried when I practiced speaking. Because everything I wanted to share came from my emotions and was very genuine, so it made me emotional. Especially on the day I gave my official speech at the graduation ceremony, there were people present that I wanted to share those things with, especially my parents,” Diem said emotionally. In the speech, when it came to the part about expressing gratitude to her parents, Diem cried a lot. Not only that, what she shared also moved many people sitting below. Diem expressed: “My parents were sitting near the stage and I could see them very clearly. So the part about my parents was like an opportunity for me to express my gratitude directly to my parents, not to give a speech. At that time, when I saw my parents crying a lot, I cried too, but I had to control my emotions to complete the speech.”
An emotional excerpt from Gia Diem's speech
“I felt that I had worked very hard, until I saw my parents still waking up at 4am every day to pay for and worry about my 4 years of university. So that now I can exchange for 4 minutes of shining on the stage of the graduation ceremony.I also thought that I had studied enough, was good enough until now I see my parents still diligently pursuing their studies. I thank you very much because today I am honored as the valedictorian of my major, but I just want to say that you are the only valedictorian in my heart. Thank you for always being here, being a strong supporter, wholeheartedly supporting me on this journey so that I can be myself. Thank you for always being one of the very few people who say they are proud of me.”
The entire content that Diem shared in her speech came from her sincere feelings and did not follow any format. When asked why she could speak fluently without looking at the paper, Diem said: “The night before the graduation ceremony, I practiced in advance and spoke many times. Moreover, because the speech was written by me, the ideas and words were mine, so it was easy to remember the ideas.” Attending the graduation ceremony and listening to Gia Diem’s entire speech that day, Master Le Au Ngan Anh, director of the event management program at Hoa Sen University, shared: “Diem’s sharing was truly sincere and touching, I sat listening with tears in my eyes; many people present in the hall that day were also very moved. The style and emotions that Diem conveyed were extremely mature and profound. The things Diem shared were very sincere, not flowery or grandiose, but every word she said touched the listeners' emotions.
Journey to conquer the title of valedictorian
For Diem, her parents are the greatest source of motivation for her to strive in her studies. Diem said: “My parents do manual labor. I love my parents very much because they have worked so hard. When I wanted to go to university, I was also aware that it would be a huge pressure for my parents.”

Aware of that, Diem always strives to study hard. To ease the burden on her parents, Diem won a scholarship to waive 50% of her university tuition. “Since I was little, I have loved studying. I want to study well so that my parents do not have to worry because they have too many worries. I also want to be better so that I can contribute my knowledge to society and help a group of people,” the female student confided. With a GPA of 3.86/4.0, Diem graduated with honors and was the valedictorian of the event management major. The title of valedictorian is a recognition of Diem’s efforts and attempts over the past time. She shared: “During my studies, I tried very hard. This is the motivation for me to continue to study more.” She admitted that she was not a smart person or had the qualities for the major she was studying. Therefore, Diem was always proactive and diligent in learning and studying. She seeks opportunities to participate in many activities, events, and research to experience and learn.
