(Dan Tri) - Foxconn's interest may be the reason why Nissan is speeding up discussions with Honda.

Right after the news that Honda and Nissan were considering merging to create a parent company, maximizing the resources of both sides, there was also information that Foxconn - a Taiwanese company specializing in manufacturing iPhones for Apple - also wanted to buy Nissan shares.

According to The Wall Street Journal, sources familiar with the matter said Foxconn has proactively proposed to buy Nissan shares. If this deal is finalized, Foxconn will have an important move, moving deeper into the auto industry.

Known as a contractor for Apple's iPhone production, Foxconn is said to be interested in Nissan's core assets, especially its experience in car design and manufacturing.

Foxconn has committed to investing $250 million in an industrial park in Vietnam focused on making electric vehicle parts. While the company has shown a number of electric concept cars, none have yet made it into production.

Foxconn plans to build cars in a similar way to the iPhone model for Apple, which is outsourcing production, according to the Wall Street Journal. Although it has little experience in body and chassis manufacturing, the partnership with Nissan could help it accelerate its car production plans.

While discussions between Honda and Nissan are still ongoing, there are reports that the two sides may form a new parent company to share resources.

While Renault has not commented directly on the possibility of a merger with Honda, a spokesperson for the company said it supports Nissan’s efforts to revive its business. According to The Financial Post, a deal with Honda would also help Renault separate itself from Nissan’s current financial difficulties.

Interestingly, some sources say that Foxconn’s interest in Nissan may have been the catalyst that accelerated the merger discussions between Honda and Nissan. The urgency seems to stem from concerns that the Taiwanese conglomerate could move ahead with its acquisition of Nissan, putting more pressure on Honda and Nissan to finalize the partnership before it’s too late.

The merger between Nissan and Honda would likely include Mitsubishi and leave the Japanese auto industry with just two major manufacturers, Nissan-Honda and Toyota, along with all the companies in which Toyota holds shares: Suzuki, Subaru, and Mazda.
