Every night after 10pm, Mr. Pham Duc Thanh, a worker at Nha Trang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company, drives a sand sifter across Nha Trang beach.
The vehicle is divided into two parts, the front part controls the engine and the back part pulls the sand screening system to filter out the trash.
Seeing us watching intently, Mr. Thanh said the shaft rolls the trash and sand into the screening machine, the sand will fall to the bottom and the trash will be transferred to the collection bin at the back of the vehicle.
"Previously, the old axle of the vehicle had sparse gears, so it could not pick up hard trash, and it could not handle a lot of trash.
"So I decided to improve the wavy rotating shaft, so that more trash can be collected without any obstruction. The shaft rotates deep in the sand to collect hard trash such as coconut shells and wooden sticks," said Mr. Thanh.
According to Mr. Thanh, since the improvement, the car works more efficiently, breaks down less, is easier to clean and repair. To make the rotating shaft, he personally came up with the idea, drew it on paper and brought it to the mechanical workshop for manufacturing.
Few people know that Mr. Thanh has been doing this job for many years, starting from late at night until nearly 5am the next morning. On major holidays or after storms, a lot of trash is washed ashore from the sea, so he and his team of workers have to work day and night.

Many people who witnessed the sand sifting truck in the middle of the night were surprised. Because with just one truck, the beach after a day full of trash was cleaned up. And they were even more surprised to know that there were people like Mr. Thanh with a lifestyle opposite to everyone else, staying up all night to collect trash on the beach.
Ms. Nguyen Thuy Trang (29 years old, a tourist from Vung Tau) shared: "My friend and I went for a walk on the beach in the evening and saw a sand-sifting vehicle running along the beach. Everywhere the vehicle passed, the sand was filtered and flattened.
Although this is just a daily job, it is very meaningful, because the beach is the top destination for tourists when coming to Nha Trang. The clean, smooth beach always leaves a good impression on visitors."
While driving slowly on the beach, Mr. Thanh smiled and said: "Looking at the clean, new beach early the next morning, I felt very happy, because I am also from Nha Trang, the love for the sea is always there.
I hope that when people or tourists go to the beach, they should not litter directly on the sand but collect it in the trash bins placed along the beach park.
Mr. Ho Ngoc An - General Director of Nha Trang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company - said that in 2020, Mr. Thanh received a certificate of merit from the Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee for his outstanding achievements in labor production.
"Since the conversion, the system has been operating safely. The improved parts on the vehicle also reduce dust during operation. This initiative also helps save a significant amount of spare parts, making Nha Trang's beach and environment greener and cleaner," said Mr. An.
