(To Quoc) - If in the past, travel was only about famous destinations and traditional itineraries, today, technology has completely changed the way we explore the world. Not only making travel more convenient, technology also creates opportunities for unprecedented experiences, breaking old limits and opening up new horizons for the generation that loves to travel, especially Gen Z.
As a young person, I once dreamed of taking a solo trip to challenge myself. My 8-day, 7-night journey in Taiwan (China) took me through cities from Taipei, Keelung, Taichung, Chiayi to Kaohsiung. That trip was the clearest proof that technology can make solo travel easier and more enjoyable.
I booked high-speed train tickets, buses to Alishan National Park, tickets to tourist attractions, and even eSIMs through Klook. Not only are these apps multilingual, they also offer many deals that help me save money compared to buying directly at the destination. In each city, I flexibly choose where to stay through Booking.com, where the map clearly shows hotels near the center or train station, making it easy for me to plan my travel.
Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok were also a big source of inspiration. I discovered many new places like hidden cafes in Taipei alleys or little-known coastal roads along Keelung. Videos and posts from local influencers were really the “guide” that helped me create a unique journey.
From personal experience, we can see that technology not only simplifies the initial preparation steps but also shapes the way we enjoy every moment of the trip. A survey published in the research predicting travel trends in 2025 by Booking.com shows that the need to explore authentic and little-known experiences is increasing, 79% of Vietnamese tourists said they use technology to search for new and little-known destinations. Expedia's research shows that up to 65% of Gen Z young people today choose destinations based on information found through online platforms. From booking air tickets, hotel rooms on applications such as Agoda or Booking.com, to scheduling their own itinerary through Google Travel or TripIt, everything is wrapped up in a few clicks.
What’s more, technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) allow travelers to “trail-trip” destinations before they arrive. This means you can “walk into” the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa, or tour the Grand Canyon from home, before deciding whether it’s really the next destination on your itinerary.
Technology is fueling new travel trends: more flexible, novel and liberal. In an increasingly open world, solo travel is becoming a favorite choice for many young people, especially Gen Z. In the past, trips were often associated with groups of friends or guided tours, but now technology has created the confidence and motivation for them to explore the world on their own.
Apps like Agoda, Klook, and Booking.com not only help you book flights or hotels, but also offer group tours and one-person experience packages. This allows solo travelers to still participate in exciting activities like hiking, exploring, or experiencing local culture without worrying about being alone.
Mobile devices such as smartphones, smartwatches or handheld gimbals also help young people freely record their journeys. Through remote control applications, they can take photos and videos without the need for a "photographer". Perfect footage or photos can now be taken with just a phone and a compact tripod.
In addition to promoting the solo travel trend, technology has also opened up unprecedented types of tourism. From virtual travel through VR, AR technology to combining work and travel (workcation), the world is becoming more flexible than ever. With the help of technology, a freelancer can work remotely in Bali while enjoying the blue sea and white sand.
Recording devices like GoPros, drones, and high-end smartphones also help young people create content and tell their stories in new ways. According to data from Statista, 86% of Gen Z uses their phones to take photos and videos while traveling. Unique moments captured from creative angles not only help them preserve memories but also inspire millions of others on social media.
But at the end of the day, technology is just a tool; the experience is the core. Over the next decade, technology promises to continue to change the way we travel. From self-driving cars and drones to artificial intelligence platforms that personalize itineraries, we’re moving closer to a future where every trip is a unique masterpiece.
However, no matter how advanced technology becomes, it is still just a tool. The most fulfilling travel experience is still how we connect with the people, cultures and nature around us. Let technology pave the way, but it is your feet and your heart that make each trip truly meaningful.
