Because she loved to study, Nguyen Thi Duyen (from Thach Ha, Ha Tinh) begged her mother to let her finish high school and then go to work.
Nguyen Thi Duyen won a full scholarship for master's degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Born into a poor family in Tan Dinh village, Luu Vinh Son commune (Thach Ha), Nguyen Thi Duyen (born in 1995) once thought she would never have the opportunity to go to school. Duyen was oriented to finish junior high school and then work as a factory worker to earn money to support her life and help her mother take care of her father who was born deaf and mute. However, with a passion for learning, Duyen tried to persuade her mother to let her finish high school and then work for hire.
With good academic performance, good morals, always exemplary, enthusiastic in taking the lead in movement activities, Duyen was trusted by her teachers and classmates to be elected as class monitor during her 3 years of studying at Ly Tu Trong High School (Thach Ha town). Having loved drawing and composing poetry since childhood, Duyen had to put her passion aside due to family circumstances. The female student switched to studying natural sciences with the hope of being able to easily find a stable career later.
In 2013, after graduating from high school with honors, Duyen applied for the A-block university entrance exam at the Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment and the B-block application at the Faculty of Biotechnology - Vietnam Academy of Agriculture. In September of that year, the admission notice from Vietnam Academy of Agriculture arrived early, opening up the opportunity for the poor female student to study biology.
To be able to go to university, Duyen took on many jobs: tutor, waiter, cleaning newly built houses, watching Internet cafes... "Any job that paid, as long as it was not against ethics, I would do it. There were times when I didn't have enough money to buy instant noodles, I had to skip meals to go to school" - Duyen emotionally recalled.
Three years after Duyen entered university, her second sister (born in 1998) also entered the lecture hall. Despite the family's difficult circumstances, because of their love for their children's education, her parents borrowed money everywhere so that Duyen and her sisters could continue their studies. "That was a difficult time for the whole family that no one wants to experience again," Duyen said.

These experiences have forged Nguyen Thi Duyen's courage, helping her always appreciate the opportunity to study to escape poverty. In her third year of university, Duyen participated in a joint training program between the Vietnam National University of Agriculture and the University of Tsukuba (Japan) for 1 semester and achieved a perfect score.
After receiving an excellent graduation certificate from the Vietnam National University of Agriculture, Duyen received a research scholarship in the field of Molecular Biology - Gene Transfer from a university in Korea and studied there until the end of 2019.
In 2020, Duyen applied for a master's scholarship granted by the Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and was awarded a full scholarship.
After 1 year of studying in Beijing, Duyen achieved a GPA of 3.94/4.0 and was sent to the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden Research Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to study and research. Currently, she is studying climate change on vegetation through studying the structure of plants.
"I chose to study ecology instead of molecular biology because of my love for nature and the joy I find in research. With ecology, I can climb forests and wade through streams, and immerse myself in nature, which suits my dreamy personality better than studying genes, DNA, RNA..." - Duyen shared.
Duyen is an example of effort to overcome difficulties, study hard to achieve success.
Not only has Duyen been an excellent student for many years, she is also fluent in various foreign languages such as English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. In March 2023, before starting the new school year, Duyen went on an internship in Norway for 5 months and spent 1 month traveling alone through many European countries such as the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland... This journey gave her many valuable lessons and experiences that Duyen never thought of many years ago.
The 9x girl shared: "For me, the path to sustainable success is knowledge. I am not afraid of difficulties and challenges, but on the contrary, I feel happy because I get to experience and challenge myself. Like working as a waiter or looking after an Internet cafe, if it weren't for the hardships of those days, there would be no me today."
Now, not only can she take care of herself, Duyen also studies and does business to help her parents take care of her third sister who is studying at Hanoi Law University. Duyen also actively participates in charity programs to support poor children.
"My immediate goal is to graduate with a master's degree and a good scientific publication. Then I can pursue a doctorate at the Chinese Academy of Sciences or apply for a scholarship at a good university in Australia. I also cherish the plan to return to Vietnam to teach after completing my studies to contribute to the development of my homeland," Duyen said.
