Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên09/01/2024

After graduating with honors with a double bachelor's and master's degree from Monash University (Australia), Le Nguyen Tra My (22 years old) continued to receive a doctoral scholarship from Deakin University (Australia) worth more than 4 billion VND.

4 years to complete both bachelor's and master's degrees

Before going to Australia to study and receiving a doctoral scholarship worth more than 4 billion VND, My was a quiet student in the literature department at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. My said that there was a time when she was disoriented in her studies and had difficulty choosing a career for the future. Studying at a school with so many excellent students also made My feel a bit pressured. "I seem to be under peer pressure. This is a common psychological state in an environment with so many talented people, but what's important is how you face and solve problems. For me, this is the motivation to study hard because there are so many excellent friends around and they are always trying every hour to be better," My said.

In July 2019, My studied a bachelor's degree in communications at Monash University. When she first came to Australia, My had difficulty communicating with locals. She improved by making friends with locals and participating in many extracurricular activities. My said that to have a smooth study abroad journey, she had to research and prepare carefully in all aspects. In addition to popular sources of information on the internet, My said that the introduction and course description from universities is a particularly important source of information. "Another important thing to note is the structure of the course, especially the regulations on choosing a major, which may be required when entering the second year. I believe that carefully researching the curriculum of the schools will help you determine a specific direction for your personal development," My shared. From the beginning of her second year of university, My decided to participate in the dual bachelor's and master's degree program at Monash University. My had to prove her grades and academic ability to qualify for the early master's program. This program allowed My to complete both degrees in 4 years with the condition that she started her master's in the 3rd year.

"Since my third year, I have started studying a master's program with higher difficulty and requirements. This requires me to focus and be proactive in my studies. I initially faced pressure in time management because of the amount of knowledge. It was my proactive mindset and preparation for high-intensity study in advance that helped me overcome this difficult time," My shared. In September 2023, My graduated from the master's program in strategic communication management with honors with a GPA of 3.75/4, and had a highly-scored graduation thesis. My's master's thesis was more than 18,000 words long, examining different aspects of online anonymity on social networks. My said that online anonymity has become a prominent aspect in the use of social networks. From researching many aspects of anonymity on social networks, My aims to find solutions to develop a healthy and safe social network environment.

Received a PhD scholarship worth more than 4 billion VND

In October 2023, My applied for a PhD program at Deakin University. In December 2023, My received an admission letter with a scholarship covering tuition, living expenses, insurance and travel with a total value of more than 4 billion VND. My said that proactively seeking help and guidance from predecessors helped shorten the time to prepare the scholarship application. "The difference between a PhD application and a bachelor's or master's application is that the research proposal must receive approval from at least one supervisor to receive support before it can be submitted. During my master's study, I proactively asked and asked for guidance from my subject teachers. Developing a research proposal is a process that requires research and identifying fields and topics. I emailed the lecturer to ask for comments and discuss the research proposal in order to make reasonable and timely adjustments," My said. My added that candidates must demonstrate seriousness in their research projects. They must clearly understand what topic and field they want to research, demonstrate a serious attitude and commitment to their plans to convince the lecturer to accept supervising the project. At the same time, they must also convince the admissions board to decide to award the candidate an admission letter along with a scholarship. Commenting on My, Huynh Tan Dat, President of the Vietnamese Students' Association in Australia, shared: "I have known My since 2021 when she wanted to become a member of the communications committee of the Vietnamese Students' Association in Australia. My is intelligent, always energetic and proactive in all tasks. To receive a full PhD scholarship, My had excellent academic achievements before that."
