The number of used Tesla vehicles for sale increased by 33% in 2025. An industry expert attributes the increase in part to Elon Musk's actions.

Tesla's nightmare shows no signs of stopping as the number of used cars for sale has increased by 33% in 2025. Specifically, citing data from Autotrader , Cox Automotive analysts revealed on March 27 that the number of Tesla cars for sale has increased from about 8,500 at the beginning of 2025 to 11,515 as of March 16.

CEO Elon Musk's quirky actions have had an "undeniable" impact on the brand, according to Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of industry analysis at Cox Automotive.

“There is no denying that Elon Musk is an influential force. His actions are impacting the brand’s image and sales. Only time will tell whether Tesla can overcome this critical period and find new growth drivers,” said Streaty.

Previously, according to Carscoops , a new survey showed that up to 67% of Americans surveyed said they would not consider owning or leasing a Tesla electric car. Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk was the main reason.

About 20% said billionaire Elon Musk was the “main reason” they would not consider buying or leasing a Tesla electric car, while another 17% said the Tesla chief was “part of the main reason.”

Thus, Elon Musk alone makes 37% of Americans dissatisfied with the Tesla brand. This number is much larger than the 27% of respondents who said that Elon Musk had nothing to do with the decision to skip Tesla electric cars.

According to Carscoops , the American billionaire was once highly revered by Tesla customers, but this effect seems to be fading.

When asked “Is Elon Musk the reason you own or lease a Tesla, or would consider it in the future?” only 1% of respondents said “Yes,” or said it was “part of the main reason.”

Tesla has been the target of protests and vandalism since Elon Musk joined the Trump administration as co-head of the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency that is pushing to reduce the size of the federal government, a move that has sparked controversy.
