EU President: Will consider removing IUU yellow card for Vietnam

At a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Vientiane (Laos), EU President Charles Michel affirmed that the EU will actively consider removing the IUU yellow card for Vietnam.
On the afternoon of October 10, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with President of the European Council (EU) Charles Michel. The Prime Minister asked the EU to continue to pay attention and urge the remaining member countries to soon ratify the Investment Protection Agreement between the two sides (EVIPA) and soon remove the IUU yellow card for Vietnam's seafood exports.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister also expressed his sincere thanks to the EU for providing humanitarian aid worth 650,000 euros to help Vietnam overcome the consequences of the recent typhoon Yagi. Emphasizing that Vietnam is an important partner in implementing the EU's Indo-Pacific Strategy, President Charles Michel affirmed that the EU will promote the early ratification of EVIPA, actively consider removing the IUU yellow card for Vietnam and continue to support Vietnam in effectively implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) framework.
Early implementation of defense agreement with Canada
Earlier, at a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the two Prime Ministers were pleased to see the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership growing strongly in many areas. At the same time, they affirmed their determination to continue to enhance and deepen cooperation between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed Canada's increased engagement with the region, both bilaterally and through ASEAN mechanisms. The Prime Minister suggested that both sides more effectively exploit opportunities for economic, trade and investment cooperation; and promote defense cooperation, including Canada's support for Vietnam to participate in United Nations peacekeeping operations. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also agreed to effectively implement defense cooperation agreements, including the Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation for the 2024-2026 period. In addition, they will continue to cooperate effectively in other important areas such as labor, social affairs, education, and people-to-people exchange.
Malaysia urged to treat fishing vessels and fishermen humanely
At the meeting on the same day, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highly appreciated the efforts of the two countries' ministries and sectors to increasingly deepen and substantiate the Vietnam-Malaysia strategic partnership.

In the first 8 months of 2024, the trade turnover between the two countries reached nearly 10 billion USD, an increase of 25% over the same period last year. In addition to promoting the increase in trade turnover, the two sides agreed to further deepen cooperation in the fields of security, education, aviation, tourism as well as new fields such as green economy and digital economy; aiming to bring the relationship between the two countries to a new height. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh appreciated the two countries' Defense Ministries' active implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Bilateral Defense Cooperation signed in December 2023. The Prime Minister also suggested that the two sides establish a consultation and management mechanism on the sea, and humanely treat captured fishing vessels and fishermen in accordance with international law and the good relations between the two countries. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim agreed to the proposal to soon bring the relationship between the two countries to a new height. He affirmed his readiness to coordinate with Vietnam to comprehensively promote cooperation in all areas, including security - defense, trade - investment, marine economy and support Vietnam to soon remove the IUU yellow card.
