Coffee is one of the main crops of Son La province. Recently, the weather in the province has been complicated, causing damage to some coffee areas. In this situation, the authorities, local governments and people have proactively implemented many measures to protect and care for coffee trees.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tung's family in Hoang Van Thu village has nearly 3 hectares of coffee trees. The cold, rainy, dry and sunny weather has caused the coffee trees to weaken after harvest. At this time, his family is focusing on fertilizing their coffee garden to provide adequate nutrition for the trees, helping the coffee trees recover and grow well.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tung - Hoang Van Thu Village, Hua La Commune, Son La City: I choose the time to fertilize coffee trees from mid-February to early March when the coffee trees have differentiated flower buds. And I will choose cool days to fertilize, if it is a sunny day, I can fertilize in the early morning or late afternoon. After fertilizing, I will water the trees immediately. First, I will fertilize with nitrogen, later I will fertilize with organic fertilizers, later I will fertilize with potassium, depending on the age of the tree and the fruit, I will combine fertilizing with potassium or phosphorus depending on each stage of the tree.
With a coffee growing area of nearly 2,000 hectares, mainly in Mai Son, Thuan Chau and Son La city, Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company is one of the companies with large coffee growing areas in the province. Faced with complicated weather conditions, the company has proactively applied solutions to help coffee trees grow well, ensuring quality and productivity. In addition, the company has sent technical staff to coordinate with local agricultural extension to guide people to proactively care for coffee trees.
Mr. Ca Van Phuong, Technical Staff of Phuc Sinh Son La Joint Stock Company: The first method is to use an irrigation system and mainly manual irrigation, which is the hand irrigation method, because the terrain in Son La is steep, for the Lao wind season, we apply that method to optimize the water, the amount of water for the coffee tree roots to absorb better. The second method is to cover the base of the tree to reduce the evaporation of water at the base of the coffee tree so that the coffee tree can withstand drought better. The third method is to use shade trees, because shade trees are currently very important for coffee trees in climate change to reduce the evaporation of water from the coffee tree and create shade for the coffee tree.
Currently, in Son La city, there are nearly 5,000 hectares of coffee, the complicated weather has negatively affected the coffee trees of many households. In this situation, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center has coordinated with local authorities to guide people on care techniques, ways to prevent coffee trees, help trees grow well, ensure quality and productivity.
Ms. Nguyen Huyen Trang, Agricultural Engineer, Son La Provincial Agricultural Extension Center: To minimize damage in coffee production, farmers should pay attention to implementing the following methods. For coffee gardens that have been damaged by frost, farmers should pay attention to pruning and pruning, and taking care of new shoots after the trees have sprouted. Secondly, for coffee gardens that are in the flowering stage, in areas with proactive irrigation water sources, farmers should take advantage of the water source and supplement water for the trees, combined with adding a little fertilizer to help the trees recover after the fruit harvest stage. Next, farmers should also take advantage of agricultural waste, by-products, and grass to make a cover to reduce evaporation and keep the coffee trees moist. And plant lotus and shade trees to create micro-climates to take good care of the coffee garden and limit the impact of the current weather.
With a proactive spirit and close coordination between the people and local authorities, coffee trees in Son La have gradually adapted to climate change. These efforts not only help protect economic benefits from coffee trees, but also contribute to raising awareness of climate change response in the community./.
