Located next to National Highway 37B, Be Market in Giao Nhan Commune, Giao Thuy District, Nam Dinh is not only a place for exchange and trading of people inside and outside the district but also becomes a unique destination attracting many tourists from all over to experience, reminisce and enjoy a series of childhood snacks.

No one knows exactly when Be Market was established, but according to many elderly locals, this market has been around for a long time, about 700 years old. What is special is that the market only opens 6 times a month, in the mornings of the 4th, 8th, 14th, 18th and 24th, 28th. The market on the 28th of Tet is the busiest and largest, lasting from early morning to late afternoon.

On weekdays, mainly in the afternoon, Be market still has trading activities but the number of customers and the items for sale are somewhat more modest.

Be Market is not only a trading place for people in communes and towns in Giao Thuy district but also attracts many traders from neighboring districts or from Thai Binh province to trade.

Like many other traditional markets in the North, Be market also sells a variety of essential goods, meeting the shopping needs of local people, from clothes, shoes to agricultural products, seafood, handmade woven products, etc. On market days, people also trade in livestock, plants, and various types of breeding animals, etc.

One thing that impresses visitors when coming to Be market is that this place still retains its traditional architecture, bearing a strong ancient and rustic character despite having undergone many renovations, upgrades and embellishments. In this market, in addition to the new areas built to meet the bustling trading needs of the people, there are still ancient market stalls built from handmade terracotta bricks and faded tiled roofs.

The stalls and market rows are all divided and designed in a neat, tidy and scientific manner. In particular, the old market stalls sell traditional goods, while the flat-roofed houses sell clothes, fashionable shoes, etc. (Photo: Quoc Dat).

Because it is a coastal market, every day, people often bring back a variety of seafood products to trade here. Seafood such as shrimp, fish, squid, mantis shrimp, snails, etc. are caught during the day so they are guaranteed to be fresh, and the prices are reasonable, so they are very popular with locals and tourists, who buy them to process and enjoy.

Not only possessing ancient and nostalgic features from architecture to indigenous trading culture, Be Market has also become a unique destination attracting many tourists from all over to visit and experience a series of hometown gifts imprinted with childhood memories.

Mr. Phan Dat (in Hanoi) said that every time he has the opportunity to return to his hometown, he and his friends ride a motorbike a few kilometers down to Be Market to enjoy some snacks that are "rare and hard to find" in the capital. "Be Market still sells and serves many rustic snacks such as banh dung, fried cakes, sweet soup or jelly, sticky rice cakes, rice paper, etc. Although modern life has many strange dishes with more attractive flavors and forms, the simple, popular hometown snacks still make us yearn. Every time we return here, we definitely have to invite each other to eat them, recalling childhood memories," Mr. Dat expressed (Photo: Quoc Dat).

In addition to traditional gifts, associated with many generations of local people, Be market also sells some new snacks, serving the diverse eating and culinary experiences of both adults and children.

Every late afternoon, after school, many students in the district come here to fill their hungry stomachs with many snacks such as grilled meat sandwiches, spring rolls, mixed rice paper, etc. at affordable prices, only from 5,000 - 7,000 VND/piece, etc. The sounds of people selling, calling out to customers, the sounds of children chatting and playing make the market scene even more crowded and bustling.
