Focusing on improving the productivity and quality of coffee products, Chieng Chung commune, Mai Son district, in coordination with specialized departments of the district, guides people to apply science and technology in planting and caring for coffee trees, bringing economic efficiency, increasing income, and improving people's lives.
Coffee trees took root in Chieng Chung since the 1990s of the last century. At first, only a few households planted Arabica coffee. Finding it suitable for the climate and soil, households began to convert some areas of ineffective corn and cassava to coffee and intercropping coffee with fruit trees. Up to now, people in the commune have planted 675 hectares of coffee trees and actively applied science and technology to care for them, replanting them in an organic, sustainable, and environmentally friendly way.
Mr. Vi Van Ha, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Chung Commune, said: The People's Committee of the commune has proactively coordinated with the district's specialized departments and coffee processing enterprises to organize training courses on planting, care and harvesting techniques to improve productivity and product quality. Cooperate with fertilizer suppliers to guide people in developing high-quality coffee, linking production with sustainable consumption. To date, the commune has more than 300 hectares of coffee linked with coffee processing companies and factories to consume products.
Nghiu Ten village has 162 households and 803 people, growing 150 hectares of coffee trees, yielding about 3,000 tons of fresh fruit per year. People have known how to apply techniques of pruning branches and tops, fertilizing at the right time and replanting old trees, so the average yield has reached 20 tons/ha, 3-4 times higher than before.
Mr. Luong Binh Quyen, Party Cell Secretary, Village Chief, said: The village has cooperated with Son La Coffee Processing Factory, Cat Que Production and Trading Company Limited, Phuc Sinh Son La Joint Stock Company to supply fertilizers, provide technical guidance on planting and caring for standard coffee, bringing stable income to the people in the village. Currently, the average income per capita of the village is nearly 25 million VND/year. With a stable economy and support from the state, the people in the village have the conditions to contribute materials and more than 1,500 working days of pouring concrete for 5 internal roads in the village, with a length of nearly 3.5 km; build a village cultural house of more than 200 m² for people to meet, participate in community activities, and improve their cultural life.
In Khoa village, there are 206 households growing 100 hectares of coffee trees, the smallest households grow about 2,000 m², the largest households grow nearly 2 hectares, the output reaches about 2,000 tons of fresh fruit/year, the average income per capita reaches more than 30 million VND/year. Mr. Leo Van Quan, Party cell secretary, village head, said: The village propagates and mobilizes people to increase product value and produce sustainable coffee according to 4C, VietGAP, organic standards and link to the value chain, increasing income on the same cultivated land area.
Developing sustainable coffee trees, becoming a key crop, associated with job creation, bringing economic efficiency, Chieng Chung commune is expanding its links with companies and processing factories to build specialized raw coffee areas, improving product quality. Promoting the transfer of coffee planting and care techniques to the people, encouraging the introduction of new varieties with high productivity and yield into production, applying drip irrigation technology, caring for coffee trees according to VietGAP and organic standards.
