Vietnamese women are the main labor force, making many positive contributions to the country's socio-economic development, especially in the journey to build a green and sustainable economy.

Green startup efforts

Master Tran Thi My Hai, who won the first prize in the 2024 "Women Entrepreneurship" contest with a project to produce textile fibers from pandan leaves, shared that after many years of doing textile research, she decided to start a business by turning food waste into materials for daily life. She was successful and created the first products such as ao dai, scarves, socks, etc.

The special feature of Ms. My Hai's startup project is that it produces raw pineapple fiber without using water. This not only saves costs but also avoids environmental pollution. At the startup competition, many experts expressed surprise at her "green startup" project and when they came to the production site and explored each stage, everyone praised the idea and potential of the project.

"We have successfully arranged and designed a high-capacity crude fiber production machine, especially suitable for women. Currently in Vietnam, no unit can do it because most of the machines are suitable for men's physique," said Ms. My Hai.

She expects to develop over 52,000 hectares of pineapple in Vietnam and create jobs for about 16,500 female workers nationwide.

Choosing the path of "green products, green health" in the journey of building its business, the representative of Traphaco Joint Stock Company said that from the beginning, the company's motto was to focus on developing from green medicinal materials to green consumption and green products.

"Our medicinal products are grown in Vietnam, the medicinal map is planned to suit the soil, in accordance with the world's clean medicinal standards. The harvesting is done with conservation. We create a harvesting habit that goes hand in hand with the exploitation and sustainable development of medicinal plant growing areas," said a representative of Tranphaco.

In Vietnam, green and sustainable development is the consistent viewpoint of the Party and Government of Vietnam, affirmed in the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress and concretized by the National Strategy on Green Growth for the period 2021-2030, vision 2050, of the Government with strategic tasks such as: Reducing the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions and promoting the use of clean energy and renewable energy; greening production; greening lifestyles and promoting sustainable consumption...

As planned, Vietnam will host the Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G) Summit in 2025. Recently, the Prime Minister also signed a decision to establish the Conference Organizing Committee headed by Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son. The Conference will be a pioneering forum on public-private partnerships for green growth, contributing to promoting cooperation and attracting green finance for developing countries to adapt to climate change and realize the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

According to the General Statistics Office, the rate of women participating in the labor force is about 62.6%. The rate of female workers in the agricultural labor force is 47.4%. In cooperatives alone, this rate is up to 80%.

The proportion of female directors/business owners and cooperative managers accounts for 28.2%. These figures show that Vietnamese women are the main workforce, making many positive contributions to the country's socio-economic development.

Accompanying women on the journey to green economic development

As an organization representing the legal and legitimate rights and interests of women, in recent times, the Vietnam Women's Union has implemented many practical activities to support women in participating in green economic development.

Many initiatives and ideas on "clean production, clean processing, clean consumption" and the "green living women" model have been responded to by women across the country.

Women's Entrepreneurship Day with the theme "Women and the future of the green economy" in 2019, "Women's startups elevate OCOP product brands" in 2022, "Women's startups promote local resources" in 2023 and "Women's startups, innovation and green transformation" in 2024 are organized and implemented throughout the Association system.

This activity has encouraged women nationwide to participate, including vulnerable women, contributing to the development of a green startup ecosystem.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the demand for green products in Vietnam will grow by an average of 15% per year in the period 2021-2023. About 72% of Vietnamese consumers are willing to pay more for green products. This shows the increasing awareness and concern of people about environmental protection.

The Association at all levels also guides and supports members and women in building and developing green, circular, bio-economic models associated with sustainable agriculture. Models using solar energy to develop livelihoods, models utilizing recycled materials (such as turning waste into health insurance, savings books for poor members) have been built and replicated in many localities.

The Association also closely coordinates with the banking sector to support women in accessing green credit capital to develop production and business; organizes many seminars and forums with related topics to propose initiatives and solutions to help women as well as the community promote circular economy and green economy.

At recent seminars and forums organized by the Vietnam Women's Union, experts said that it is necessary to remove barriers and gender stereotypes and encourage women to participate in the green economy to ensure good working conditions for women.

In the 4.0 industrial revolution, women need to actively study, improve their skills, increase research to master knowledge, proactively raise awareness of the need to green the economy; promote the application of environmentally friendly production processes and technologies, ensuring products of good quality and safety for consumers.

Along with that, agencies and organizations actively support and link products with the market, helping women bring green goods to consumers.
