According to the Hanoi Statistics Office, in August 2024, 8/11 CPI groups increased compared to July 2024. Of which, the housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials groups increased by 0.50%, the reason is believed to be due to the beginning of the new school year, the demand for housing of university students increased, so the rental price increased and some main construction materials used for housing maintenance also increased.
In addition, the food and catering services group also increased by 0.43% (increasing the overall CPI by 0.13%) due to a 0.62% increase in food prices; a 0.18% increase in food prices; and an increase in eating out by 0.04%. The education group increased by 0.23% (increasing the overall CPI by 0.02%). The remaining groups such as beverages, tobacco, culture, entertainment, tourism, etc. saw a slight increase in CPI from 0.03% to 0.06%.
On the other hand, 2/11 CPI groups decreased compared to July 2024, including the transportation group and the household equipment and appliances group. Specifically, the transportation group decreased by 1.96% (affecting the overall CPI by 0.19%) due to the average monthly gasoline price decreasing by 5.61% compared to the previous month. The household equipment and appliances group decreased slightly by 0.04%. Only post and telecommunications were equivalent to the previous month.
On average, in the first 8 months of 2024, CPI increased by 5.24% compared to the same period last year, in which 10/11 commodity groups had an average CPI increase. The education group increased by 29.33% (causing the average CPI for the first 8 months of this year to increase by 2.32%) because in the first 3 months of 2024, public schools in Hanoi applied tuition fees according to Resolution 03/2023/NQ-HDND dated July 4, 2023 of the Hanoi People's Council, and at the same time, some private schools also applied increased tuition fees in the 2023-2024 school year.
The gold price index in August 2024 increased by 1.54% compared to the previous month, by 25.04% compared to December 2023 and by 36.8% compared to the same period last year. On average, in the first 8 months of 2024, the gold price index increased by 28.73% compared to the average in the same period in 2023.
