According to VNA correspondent in Prague, on August 22, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Czech Republic Duong Hoai Nam had a working session with the host country's Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Sikela on the occasion of his official nomination by the Czech Government to assume the position of Commissioner of the European Commission (EC).

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Minister Sikela expressed his deepest condolences to the Party, State and people of Vietnam on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong; highly appreciated the efforts and important contributions of the General Secretary to Vietnam's economic reform and international integration in recent times. Minister Sikela affirmed that the Czech Government always considers Vietnam the most important partner and market in Southeast Asia; expressed his delight at the continuous growth in trade turnover between the two countries in recent years; hoped that the Vietnamese Government would continue to create favorable conditions for Czech enterprises and investors operating in Vietnam, especially the SKODA-Thanh Cong Automobile Manufacturing Joint Venture and the Mong Duong II Thermal Power Plant in Quang Ninh; believed that the success of these two projects would further strengthen the confidence of Czech enterprises in expanding investment in Vietnam, while helping to create thousands of new jobs for Vietnam. Minister Sikela recalled the memory of his visit to Vietnam in February 2023 and his meeting with Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) in early February 2024; hoping that the two sides would coordinate well to organize the 8th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Economic Cooperation scheduled to be held at the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, contributing to raising bilateral relations to a new height. For his part, Ambassador Duong Hoai Nam congratulated Minister Sikela on his nomination to take on a new responsibility at the EC, thanking the Minister's personal good feelings for Vietnam as well as the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries. The Ambassador emphasized that the space and potential for cooperation between the two countries is very large; The two sides proposed that they prioritize the effective implementation of the Vietnam - European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to further expand bilateral cooperation, especially in areas where both sides have strengths and needs, towards the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1950 - 2025), including including Vietnam in the Czech Republic's Qualified Worker Programme. Ambassador Duong Hoai Nam expressed his hope that as an EC Commissioner, Minister Sikela will continue to support Vietnam as well as the Vietnam-EU relationship, especially paying attention to and urging the European Commission to remove the IUU "yellow card" for Vietnamese seafood, soon recognizing the Market Economy Status for Vietnam and requesting the remaining EU member states to ratify the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) to create new momentum, further deepening the Vietnam-EU economic-trade relationship in general and between Vietnam and the Czech Republic in particular.
