After two years of construction, Van Thanh Bridge across Ca Ty River, the gateway to Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province, has missed its deadline and requested to postpone its opening to traffic until the end of 2025.

Van Thanh Bridge was started in early January 2023. This bridge crosses the Ca Ty River, connecting Phu Tai, Duc Long and Tien Loi wards (Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan).

After completing the largest bridge in Phan Thiet City, it is expected to help ease the burden on Tran Quy Cap Street, which is currently overloaded during rush hour.

The last days of the year at the Van Thanh bridge construction site, the construction atmosphere is quiet.

On the bank of Duc Long ward, a group of workers are constructing bridge piers to prepare for pouring concrete for the bridge piers.

Observations by reporters show that after nearly two years of construction, the contractor has only just started the project under the river, while the approach roads at both ends of the bridge are still "inactive" due to the site not being handed over.

Representative of the Joint Contractor, Mr. Kieu Ngoc Vu, engineer in charge of the construction site, said: Currently, the construction of M2 pier and T1, T4, T5 piers, T2, T3 pile system, and 114/114 bridge girders have been completed.

Construction progress of Van Thanh bridge is delayed due to land clearance problems.

The construction unit has completed 44/44 concrete piles, installed 13/114 beams, and is constructing T2 pillar.

"In the near future, the contractor will continue to install the completed bridge girders. If the weather is favorable, they will be transported from the concrete factory in Can Tho by sea to complete the upper structure of the bridge," said engineer Vu.

According to engineer Kieu Ngoc Vu, after the groundbreaking day, the contractor immediately encountered difficulties due to the lack of a service road, making it very difficult to access and transport equipment to the project site.

Recently, the contractor consortium has proposed to extend the construction time, because they are waiting for the site to be cleared for the construction of the joint connecting the approach roads at both ends of the bridge.

"When the approach road is available, the contractor commits to focusing on speeding up the progress of completing the main bridge and traffic safety items, opening the bridge to traffic by the end of September 2025," said engineer Vu.

According to the assessment of the Provincial Traffic Project Management Board (investor), the current project progress has reached about 51% of the contract volume, slower than the direction of the Provincial People's Committee.

The contractor is currently implementing underwater and nearshore construction. The reason the project has not been completed on time is because the site clearance work is still facing many difficulties and obstacles.

Up to now, Phan Thiet City Land Fund Development Center has mobilized to hand over two out of a total of 34 households.

In addition, four organizations on state-managed land have also allocated land with an area of thousands of square meters.

"The site handover is delayed, so construction methods must be adjusted. Recently, the investor has proposed to postpone the project completion time to 2025," informed Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hien, Deputy Director of the Traffic Project Management Board of Binh Thuan province.

Van Thanh Bridge consists of 6 spans 180m long, bridge width 19m, of which the width of the roadway is 15m, the width of the sidewalk and railing on each side is 2m. The approach road is nearly 300m long, the sidewalk on each side is 6m, the Y-shaped intersection is renovated. Other invested items include traffic safety system, trees, lighting, drainage system.

Total investment is over 22 billion VND from the Central budget. Construction unit: Joint venture of Hassyu Vietnam Joint Stock Company - Bridge 14 Joint Stock Company - Construction Equipment and Materials Joint Stock Company 624. Construction time is 720 days.
