Club Nacional announced on social media that Izquierdo's death was a deep pain and left the entire team with endless regret. The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) also posted a message of gratitude and condolences after Izquierdo was confirmed to have passed away in hospital on August 27.
Players worried after Izquierdo was rushed to hospital
Izquierdo was taken to Albert Einstein Hospital after he collapsed in the 84th minute of a Copa Libertadores match at Sao Paulo's Morumbi Stadium on August 22. Nacional said he was "stable" shortly afterwards, but Izquierdo eventually died.
The hospital announced that Izquierdo suffered a "cardiac arrest related to arrhythmia." Previously, doctors at the hospital said Izquierdo had been on a ventilator since August 25 and was receiving intensive care.
Uruguayan media reported that Izquierdo's parents and Nacional executives have been at the hospital in Sao Paulo since the incident. Izquierdo is married with two children, the youngest of whom was born in early August.
Uruguay's first and second divisions were suspended last weekend after news of Izquierdo's deteriorating health. Sao Paulo players wore Izquierdo's jerseys ahead of the team's 2-1 win over Vitoria in the Brazilian championship on August 25.
Izquierdo suddenly collapsed on the field
Izquierdo's professional career began in 2018 at Cerro. He joined Penarol the following year, but did not get much playing time. The defender then moved to Montevideo Wanderers. His impressive form and effective tackling attracted the attention of San Luis (Mexico) and they joined him in 2021, but Izquierdo quickly returned to Montevideo Wanderers. Izquierdo was signed by Nacional in 2022, played one game and then moved to Liverpool Montevideo.
The defender was one of Liverpool Montevideo's standout performers during a season that led the team to the 2023 Uruguayan championship, the club's first title in more than a century.
Izquierdo returned to Nacional this year and competed for a starting spot with veteran Uruguay international Sebastian Coates. He played 23 games this year and scored one goal.
