“Leaders of Change” Club Helps Mountain Students Become More Confident

Việt NamViệt Nam30/11/2024

The “Leaders of Change” Club at Son Giang Primary and Secondary School, Son Ha District, Quang Ngai Province has contributed to solving gender equality issues and urgent issues for women and children; ensuring the voice and role of girls in socio-economic development in the community.

In Quang Ngai province, the “Leaders of Change” club has been deployed in many areas with a large ethnic minority population. This is one of the models for children under Project 8 “Achieving gender equality and solving some urgent issues for women and children”.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Dung - Principal of Son Giang Primary and Secondary School, shared about the effectiveness of the "Leader of Change" Club model for students in the school.

– What changes has the “Leaders of Change” Club model brought to students at Son Giang Primary and Secondary School, madam?

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Dung: Son Giang Primary and Secondary School has 99% of students from ethnic minorities, therefore, their awareness and understanding are limited. In Project 8, our school was chosen by the Women's Union of Quang Ngai province as one of the locations to organize the "Leader of Change" Club model.

Regarding club activities, we often organize activities weekly or quarterly, depending on the time to suit the students' study and exam programs. The content is often organized in an integrated manner, focusing on social issues of concern. For the students in the club, we often organize activities for them in advance with useful content and knowledge, which the club will deploy in flag-raising activities. Then it will be deployed to all classes in the school.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Dung, Principal of Son Giang Primary and Secondary School, shared with students participating in the "Leaders of Change" Club.

I have noticed that since the Club was established, the students in the school have been very interested and have created a useful playground in many fields for them, especially for the students in the Club. They are bold and want to show off to the students of the whole school, first of all about their knowledge; then, they are bold and confident to pass on the messages - the content of the Club's activities - for their friends in the school to grasp, learn more, to raise awareness.

– Could you please share the current difficulties the Club is facing?

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Dung: When we established the club and organized activities at school, at first we encountered many difficulties. First of all, the students were shy and lacked boldness. To overcome this, we assigned cadres, teachers, and the Youth Union and Young Pioneers to support and give advice to the students and organize a model of how to run an activity. After that, the students were bold and enthusiastic in participating. From these activities, the students were inspired with ideas and specialized content.

We also choose topics that students are interested in and common problems that children face such as school violence, adolescent psychological problems; early marriage and incestuous marriage... Through the club's activities, teachers integrate activities to guide and share with students skills such as how to work in groups, develop their strengths, knowledge about gender, psychology in puberty, gender stereotypes and gender prejudices... This helps students become more confident, gain more knowledge and skills in life.

Joining the "Leaders of Change" Club, students confidently share their thoughts.

– Do you have any suggestions or recommendations to make the school's "Leaders of Change" Club model operate more effectively?

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Dung: We also hope that departments, boards and branches will coordinate and pay attention to creating conditions to organize more useful and practical activities for the children. We also hope that the Women's Union at all levels will coordinate to create more playgrounds such as dramatization, or diversify forms of propaganda materials... so that students have more opportunities to boldly and confidently demonstrate their abilities, and increase their knowledge in all areas of society.

Thank you!
