This is one of the results of the project "Reducing plastic waste pollution (RTN) on the Red River" piloted in Nam Dinh province to reduce the source of plastic waste from the mainland flowing into the ocean, announced by the Center for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD).

The project “Reducing plastic pollution on the Red River” is funded by the Ocean Conservation Organization (OC), the project is chaired by the MCD Center and coordinated with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Nam Dinh, and partners. In particular, the “trash trap” has been professionally assessed and allowed to be piloted by the Vietnam Inland Waterways Administration. The “trash trap” is placed in the water area along the riverbank, serving to enhance waste management in the riverbank and estuary areas in Nam Dinh.

Of which, 5 "trash traps" were placed on the Red River in the communes of My Tan (My Loc), Dien Xa, Nam Thang (Nam Truc), Xuan Thanh (Xuan Truong), Giao Huong (Giao Thuy) and 1 "trash trap" was placed on the Dao River in Tran Te Xuong ward (Nam Dinh city). The results were the collection from the traps, classification, and treatment of 15 tons of garbage, of which plastic waste accounted for 51.4%; mobilizing about 4,500 people to directly participate in project activities; training, dialogue, technical support, and capacity building for solid waste and plastic waste management for over 800 people; communicating relevant information about project activities, raising awareness about pollution sources, and promoting plastic waste pollution treatment solutions to 19 million people.

Ms. Pham Thi Cuc - Core group operating the "trash trap" in Xuan Thanh commune, Xuan Truong district said that previously, waste generated from localities at the source along the rivers flowing into the basin in Nam Dinh was not collected, the amount of waste flowing into the estuary was not collected, causing environmental pollution, affecting the mangrove ecosystems, marine resources in the coastal estuary area, causing environmental pollution and loss of aesthetics. Since knowing about the project, we have been very supportive and mobilized many people to join hands to reduce plastic waste into the sea.

Ms. Pham Thi Cuc - Core group operating trash traps in Xuan Thanh commune, Xuan Truong district shared about the results of the Project.

Sharing the same view with Ms. Cuc, Mr. Do Van Thien - Core group operating trash traps in Giao Huong commune, Giao Thuy district shared that since the implementation of the Project "Reducing plastic pollution on the Red River" has improved and managed solid waste on rivers, riverbanks and estuaries in the Red River area in Nam Dinh, local people in areas where trash traps are installed have also changed, aware of limiting littering, collecting and treating household solid waste, minimizing the impact on the environment of rivers, especially the Red River in the past time. I hope to replicate the "trash trap" model to other localities.

Mr. Do Quang Trung - Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Nam Dinh province highly appreciated the "Project to Reduce Plastic Waste Pollution on the Red River" which has significantly supported in raising the attention and awareness of Nam Dinh officials and people about solid waste pollution, plastic waste, especially in riverside, estuary and coastal areas. I hope that in the coming time, Nam Dinh will continue to receive support to carry out more programs and activities to collect, treat waste and protect the environment.
