After a year of applying the 2018 General Education Program in grade 10, high schools have developed and adjusted subject combinations to make students' learning as effective as possible.

Therefore, at this time, when starting to register for subject combinations for high school, many parents and students are confused. Ms. Phan Thanh Nhu, a parent of a student at Le Quy Don High School (District 3), shared: "In April, the homeroom teacher of grade 9 and the principal of my child's middle school introduced the high school program, but honestly, at that time, not only me but almost all the parents in the class were only concerned about their children choosing the right choice for their abilities to be admitted to a public school. Now we are really entering the stage of brainstorming to choose the right subject combination for their strengths, passions, and future career orientation."

Student Nguyen Thanh Chau, who was admitted to his first choice at a high school with a top admission score in Ho Chi Minh City, also said that when he applied for the 10th grade entrance exam, he only focused on choosing a school he liked, one that was suitable for his academic ability and had a close friend who also applied. Now that he has been admitted, he and his friend are discussing whether his major and university are in the fields of economics, engineering or humanities, and from there, he will choose from the school's combination.

"Students need to listen to themselves and evaluate their internal strength. In case they do not know what career they want to do or what major they want to study, determine whether they like natural sciences or social sciences. Because when you like a subject, it will promote your abilities and strengths," said Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School.

Similarly, to make the right choice, Ms. Bui Minh Tam, Principal of Le Quy Don High School (District 3), emphasized: "Students must be able to position themselves, answer the questions of what their strengths are, who they dream of becoming, what they want to do, in the context of future career trends. Parents also need to accompany their children, think carefully, choose seriously and take responsibility for that choice. However, parents only play the role of advisors and guides, not choosing for their children."

How does the school adjust?

The 2023-2024 school year is the second year that the 2018 General Education Program is applied to high school. After a year of implementing the new program, schools have made adjustments to suit students and the effectiveness of the program. Schools have built a richer curriculum than last year to meet the needs of students in the existing conditions of the school.

2018 General Education Program at High School Level

The 2018 General Education Program will officially be applied at the high school level in the 2022-2023 school year for grade 10. The 2023-2024 school year is the second year of implementation at this level.

Accordingly, the 2018 general education program at high school level includes compulsory subjects, activities and elective subjects.

Compulsory subjects and educational activities include: literature; math; foreign language 1; history; physical education; national defense and security education; experiential activities, career guidance; local educational content.

Elective subjects: Students choose 4 subjects out of 9 elective subjects.

Optional subjects include: geography, economic and legal education, physics, chemistry, biology, technology, information technology, music, and fine arts.

For example, Le Quy Don High School has 15 10th grade classes, with 10 natural science classes and 5 social science classes. Each student will have 2 subject groups to choose from, and the school will arrange classes according to the most preferred choice. According to the school's leaders, the construction of subject groups to choose from is based on a survey of the school's training strengths over many years, and at the same time, experience gained after the first year of implementing the new program.

In the first year, Nguyen Huu Cau High School had 6 subject groups for students to choose from. In the second year of applying the program, the school built 8 groups with full component subjects, including music and fine arts.

Choosing elective subjects is an important task for 10th grade students.

In addition to organizing the registration of elective combinations in the form of "combo", which means pre-building combinations for students to choose from, Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City) has changed the way it is organized. Ms. Hoang Thi Hao, Principal of the school, said that last school year, the school built combinations and when students registered, there were students who liked 3/4 subjects of this combination, 1 subject of another combination... Therefore, this school year, the school did not build combinations in advance but students registered themselves and proposed their wishes.

How do students choose electives?

Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Mai, Principal of Nguyen Huu Cau High School (Hoc Mon District), said that after the first year of applying the new program to high school level, about 20 students out of a total of 500 students completing grade 10 in the 2022-2023 school year wished to change their elective combination.

Besides, according to Ms. Mai, after a year of observation, it shows that 10th grade students mainly choose elective subjects such as physics, chemistry, and biology even though they have not yet decided on a specific future career, because according to them, these subjects are included in many exam blocks and university entrance exam combinations...

Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), commented that students from top schools mostly lean towards natural sciences and are oriented towards medicine, pharmacy, economics, engineering, etc. Students from lower-ranked schools often choose subjects that lean towards studying, so they mainly choose majors in the social sciences.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hao said that in addition to compulsory subjects, students are assigned to fixed classes, and for elective subjects, the school will arrange a timetable so that students can move to each room teaching specific subjects. While parents and students are thinking and researching, the school's advisory board will support and answer questions 24/7 on social networks.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hao also emphasized: If not carefully advised, parents and students will have the mentality of choosing just for the sake of it, choosing without understanding career orientation... During the counseling process, the teacher in charge must help parents and students understand the importance of choosing a subject, to choose in the most serious and responsible way. In cases where there is still ambiguity and no specific orientation, in addition to discussing and understanding the student's thoughts, the teacher can base on the student's report card, see which subject has positive results, positive signals, then advise the student.
