Close-up of 5 intersections in Ho Chi Minh City that will soon have overpasses built

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has just proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee prioritize the construction of overpasses at five intersections to solve traffic congestion. The total investment capital for this project is expected to be about VND4,000 billion and will be implemented from now until 2030.

The proposed additional intersections include: Dien Bien Phu – Ngo Gia Tu – Ly Thai To – Le Hong Phong intersection (District 3, District 10); Nguyen Tri Phuong – Ngo Gia Tu – Nguyen Chi Thanh intersection (District 5, District 10); Nguyen Oanh – Phan Van Tri intersection (Go Vap District); National Highway 1 – Road No. 7 – Road No. 18 intersection (Binh Tan District). The total expected investment is 400 billion VND/project.

The intersections prioritized for flyover construction are traffic congestion hotspots, affecting people's travel. Investing in flyover construction not only helps reduce congestion but also improves traffic safety and synchronously develops the city's traffic infrastructure.

According to Dan Tri reporters, although it is not rush hour at Ly Thai To intersection, this area is often crowded with vehicles. This is also the intersection of many major roads, connecting traffic with districts 1, 3 and district 5.

Nguyen Tri Phuong and Ly Thai To are two of the largest intersections in the inner city. Accordingly, the overpasses built in these two areas will include branches crossing the intersections, helping to reduce the current intersections. The directions of the bridge branches will be calculated appropriately when entering the specific research phase of the projects.

The overpass project at the Bon Xa intersection (Binh Tan district) with an investment of nearly 2,400 billion VND (land clearance of nearly 2,100 billion VND), this is the intersection with the largest total investment capital with the scale of building an overpass in the direction of Le Van Quoi - Hoa Binh street, 280m long, 12m wide and two-way traffic.

Since 2016, the overpass project at Bon Xa intersection has been approved in principle by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council but has not been implemented due to lack of capital.

Bon Xa Intersection is the intersection of 6 roads: Binh Long, Thoai Ngoc Hau, Hoa Binh, Phan Anh, Huong Lo 2 and Le Van Quoi, on the list of 24 black spots of traffic congestion in Ho Chi Minh City.

“Coming to work in the morning is like torture. Normally, the road is not crowded, it only takes me 15 minutes to get to work. But there are days when there is a traffic jam and it takes me almost an hour to get there. If there was an overpass here, it would be great, no more jostling,” said Ms. Tran Kim Ngoc (28 years old, Binh Tan district).

At the northern gateway area, the Nguyen Oanh – Phan Van Tri intersection is also one of the traffic jam black spots. The proposed project to build an overpass costs 400 billion VND, the bridge is 500m long, 2-4 lanes wide (for two-way traffic in the direction of Nguyen Oanh).

At the intersection of National Highway 1 - Road No. 7 - Road No. 18, the city's transport sector plans to build an overpass or underpass with a length of 400m, 2-4 lanes wide (for two-way traffic in the direction of Road No. 7 - Road No. 18).

The construction of flyover projects not only contributes to solving traffic congestion but also creates favorable conditions for the city's socio-economic development in the future.
