Specifically, Mr. Havannall said that Cambodia is planning to develop airports in the eastern province of Mondulkiri and Koh Rong island as part of the Cambodian government's agenda to develop tourism, according to the Khmer Times today, November 20.
“Cambodia is building two airports, upgrading the standards of one airport and planning to build two more airports to improve the country’s connectivity,” said Mr Havannall.
One of the two airports under construction is Techo International Airport, which is expected to be completed in 2024. Funded by the Cambodia Airports Investment Corporation (CAIC), the $1.5 billion project is being developed by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau on 2,600 hectares in the southern provinces of Kandal and Takeo. Construction on the airport began in 2019.

The master plan shows that Techo International Airport will be able to handle 13 million passengers per year in phase one, 30 million passengers in phase two by 2030 and 50 million passengers in phase three by 2050.
The second airport under construction is the $200 million Dara Sakor International Airport in Koh Kong province, which is now in its final stages. The new airport, being built by China’s Tianjin Union Development Group (UDG), will be able to handle wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A340.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet inaugurated Siem Reap Angkor International Airport in Siem Reap province on November 16. He said it was Cambodia’s first airport developed under China’s Belt and Road Initiative and that the new $1.1 billion airport would boost tourism.

Khmer Times quoted a report from SSCA saying that Cambodia's international airports handled 4.11 million passengers between January and October 2023, up 144% year-on-year. The report also said that Cambodia recorded a total of 41,596 flights at international airports during the 10-month period, up 93% year-on-year.
The figures also show a significant recovery in Cambodia’s aviation industry, Havannall said. The country now has direct flights to eight ASEAN member states, as well as China, South Korea, and Qatar, among others, according to the SSCA report.
