For the past year, Mr. Noboa and Ms. Abad have been at loggerheads over who will represent the country as president when Mr. Noboa takes a break to campaign for the presidential election to be re-elected for a four-year term.

Ecuador's constitution stipulates that when the president is running for reelection, leadership of the country must be transferred to the vice president.

Ms. Abad, who is also Ecuador’s ambassador to Israel, has repeatedly asserted that she has the right to succeed the president. However, she has been suspended from her post by the Ministry of Labor since November 2024.

In the new decree, Mr. Noboa stated that Ms. Abad was banned from holding public office due to legal issues and disobedience. The ministry accused her of serious disciplinary violations by not following Mr. Noboa’s orders to come to Turkey on time.

In the April election, Mr. Noboa will face leftist candidate Luisa González – an unexpectedly tight race given that the two candidates previously ran in a 2023 snap election.

The political crisis comes as Ecuador faces growing unrest, including gang violence and economic recession.
