Orange prices are currently high, but people in Vu Quang (Ha Tinh) are not in a hurry to sell, because currently, the orange output in local hill gardens is not much, so garden owners are "hoarding goods" waiting for Tet.
At this time, the nearly 1 hectare orange garden of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong's family in Village 1, Quang Tho Commune still has about 1 ton of fruit to serve the Tet market. Although traders come to buy continuously, her family still saves it to sell for Tet.
The orange garden of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong's family in village 1 (Quang Tho commune) still has about 1 ton of fruit to supply the market for the upcoming Lunar New Year.
Ms. Thuong said: "This year, the orange yield is not high, but the price is good, so the family is very happy. More than 1 hectare of Xa Doai oranges has produced nearly 8 tons of fruit. Up to now, the family has sold 7 tons, with an average price of 35,000 VND/kg. Although the price of oranges is currently high, at 40,000 VND/kg, the family is still trying to wait until Tet to sell at a higher price."
According to Ms. Thuong, the Tet orange crop brings a huge income to the family, so in order to sell at a high price, it is necessary to monitor regularly and proactively prune diseased fruits to avoid infecting other fruits. In particular, to keep the oranges fresh and ensure quality, the family also uses bags to make the oranges more shiny and beautiful.
This year's orange crop, Quang Tho people estimate to harvest more than 1,400 tons of fruit/200 hectares of oranges in harvest.
Mr. Nguyen Hung Cuong - Chairman of Quang Tho Commune People's Committee said: "This year, local people in the commune estimate to harvest more than 1,400 tons of oranges/200 hectares of oranges in harvest. Up to this point, people have sold more than 1,000 tons, the rest are waiting until closer to Tet to sell, even though the price of oranges is currently high. The locality is focusing on directing people to closely follow weather developments to have appropriate harvesting plans to ensure revenue for the upcoming Lunar New Year."
Along with other gardeners in the area, these days, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung in Cao Phong village (Duc Linh commune) is also busy taking care of more than 1 hectare of his family's orange and lemon garden. This year, his family's orange and lemon garden has produced about 10 tons of fruit. From the beginning of the season until now, he has sold about 7 tons, with about 3 tons left to serve the Tet market.
The orange trees laden with fruit of Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung's family in Cao Phong village (Duc Linh commune) are waiting to be sold during Tet.
Mr. Hung said: "The oranges are at the end of the season so traders are constantly asking to buy them, but because there are few left, I am saving them to sell during Tet. Currently, some regular customers in Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi... have ordered Tet oranges at prices from 50,000 VND/kg; the increase in orange prices has helped my family earn more income. From now until Tet, I hope the weather will be favorable and market demand will increase so that we, orange growers, can sell at higher prices."
The ripe orange gardens on the hillsides in Vu Quang promise to bring people a "warm hand" Tet.
Not only lemon oranges and Xa Doai oranges, at this time, some areas of Bu oranges in Tho Dien commune have also entered the harvest season. According to the orange grower Vu Quang, in the days before Tet, Bu orange prices have increased from 25,000 VND/kg to 30 - 35,000 VND/kg, while beautiful lemon oranges and Xa Doai oranges are being sold in the garden at 40 - 45,000 VND/kg (15 - 20 thousand VND/kg higher than the beginning of the season) and are tending to be higher in the days before Tet. However, because the current orange output in the hill gardens is not much, garden owners are "hoarding goods" waiting for Tet.
Mr. Phan Xuan Nam - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vu Quang district said: "In recent years, thanks to the focus on applying technology to production, the local orange brand has been increasingly enhanced, consumed by customers in all provinces and cities across the country. This year's Tet holiday, the whole district has about 3,500 tons of oranges supplied to the market, mainly lemon oranges, Xa Doai oranges and a few pomelos. Thanks to good care, the quality of this year's Tet oranges is large, sweet and uniform. In particular, the oranges are sold at a good price, so people are very excited, promising to bring a "warm" source of income for the people."
