Upon its release, "Joker 2" quickly surpassed many competitors to top the box office charts. However, the film's revenue did not explode as expected by the producer, and its content received many negative reviews.
In its third week in theaters, Bran no longer holds the top spot in the revenue rankings of Box Office Vietnam (independent box office watchdog). Meanwhile, blockbuster Joker 2 launched but did not create too explosive effect.
Contrary to many people's expectations, the box office has not regained its heat as the revenue of newly released films is low, not exceeding 10 billion VND.
Joker 2 not exploded
Joker 2: Crazy in Pairs is the sequel to Joker (2019) – once made a splash when it won two Oscars and grossed over 1 billion USD worldwide. The work is considered by many websites to be the most anticipated blockbuster at the end of this year because of its budget of up to 200 million USD, and the presence of star Lady Gaga.
The project is still directed, written and produced by Todd Phillips. The content is simple, revolving around the love story of the main character Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) and Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga) after the two met in Arkham hospital.
The filmmaker chose a different direction, combining musical elements and psychological thrillers to retell a love story that is already too familiar to fans.
Unfortunately, the film received many negative reviews from critics and audiences because the script was limited, the music took up a lot of time, making the content less profound, unable to surpass its predecessor.
During the three-day weekend, the film earned more than 6.5 billion VND at Vietnamese theaters with 60,241 sold in 4,262 screenings. This figure is even lower than Bran last week (13 billion VND with 6,644 shows). This is a disappointing achievement for a blockbuster with a large investment.
In the international market, Joker 2 also did not achieve the impressive sales as expected by the producer. Currently, the film has only earned more than 121 million USD worldwide, most likely facing losses.
Previously, the first part Joker once caused a fever in our country, earning more than 74 billion VND when it was released in 2019. However, at present, the superhero movie genre is in decline, plus negative reactions make the audience no longer interested in part two.
Korean movies I bet you can't handcuff me maintained second place on the overall chart. The project was not heavily promoted but attracted audiences through word of mouth.
The film's content is not too new, revolving around the battle for justice between the police and criminals in Seoul city. However, director Ryoo Seung Wan still succeeded in creating an attractive and entertaining work. The appearance of two stars Hwang Jung Min and Jung Hae In also helped the work win the hearts of Vietnamese audiences.
Third place belongs to Thai horror film Kumanthong: Summoning the Soul of a Child . The film earned more than 4.1 billion VND in three days of the weekend despite its outdated content, clumsy script and non-star cast.
This shows that there is still an audience that loves ghost and spirit genres and is willing to buy tickets to the theater.
Bran exhausted
After two weeks at the top of the charts, Bran unexpectedly dropped to fourth place on the overall chart because it could not maintain its popularity. The film earned 3.9 billion VND with 43,990 tickets in 2,223, down about 71% compared to last week (13.4 billion VND).
The project had an impressive opening revenue of over 40 billion VND in the first three days of its release, but then ticket sales continuously decreased. The reason came from poor quality, creating many controversial opinions surrounding the 18+ scene of the character Tam (Rima Thanh Vy).
However, Bran is still the highest grossing film from director Tran Huu Tan's team, surpassing Soul Eater released last year. The producers were so confident that they quickly announced the production of a sequel as soon as the film was released, promising to create a blockbuster brand for Vietnamese cinema.
The last position in the top 5 belongs to Grave of the Fireflies . After 36 years, the classic animated film still attracts Vietnamese audiences with 3.7 billion VND in three days of the weekend. The sad wartime story is considered to retain its value over time, easily touching the emotions of any audience.
There aren't many notable foreign films released this week. Therefore, all attention is on these two. Vietnamese movies To be Domino: The Last Exit (directed by Nguyen Phuc Huy Cuong) and The Bride of a Noble Family (Vu Ngoc Dang).
Although the official schedule is October 18, the crew The Bride of a Noble Family choose the strategy of showing early (sneak show) one week in advance. This is a reasonable direction because at the moment there are not many blockbusters in theaters.
In terms of heat, action movies Domino: The Last Exit not as attractive and was introduced quite late before the release date. The male lead Thuan Nguyen is also not a popular face, guaranteeing success at the box office.
Meanwhile, The Bride of a Noble Family The film brings together a star-studded cast including Thu Trang, Le Giang, Kieu Minh Tuan, People's Artist Hong Van... and is performed by an experienced crew.
Therefore, Vu Ngoc Dang's film has an advantage when it is released, and will likely surpass its competitors to achieve high revenue.
