Earlier in April, the two sides met in China to discuss reconciliation efforts to end some 17 years of political division.
The meetings come amid heightened tensions between the two factions over the conflict between Hamas and Israel. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who leads the Fatah movement, has previously criticized Hamas over the war, while Hamas has accused the Palestinian president of siding with Israel.

The two main Palestinian factions have been at odds since Hamas won legislative elections in 2006. In 2017, Hamas took over the Gaza Strip after a brief civil war in which it defeated Palestinian forces loyal to President Abbas.
So far, efforts since 2007 by Arab countries, led by Egypt, have not ended the power struggle between Hamas, the force that controls Gaza, and President Abbas's Fatah movement, the core force of the Palestinian Authority.
