Although it has entered the peak season for Tet goods trading, traders at Ha Tinh City market are still quite cautious in importing goods because the market is less vibrant and purchasing power has slowed down compared to previous years.
Unlike the bustling atmosphere of many years ago, at this time, the household ceramics and Ly Que fabric and plastic flower stalls at Ha Tinh City Market are quite deserted. The purchasing power is slow, so Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly - the stall owner - has to both import goods and wait for the market. Currently, the amount of imported goods is less than half of last year.
At this time, the amount of Tet goods imported by Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly is less than half of last year.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly said: “Customers usually buy bowls, chopsticks, cups, trays, and decorative flowers early, so around the beginning of the 11th lunar month, we start importing Tet goods. We import more of the best-selling models. However, this year, seeing the market is quiet and purchasing power has been slow since the beginning of the year, I dare not import many goods. At this time last year, there were many people shopping for Tet, I had to sell 12-13 million VND/day, but this year I only earn about 3-4 million VND/day.”
Selling groceries at Ha Tinh City Market since 2006, but this year, Ms. Duong Thi Tham is not "spending a lot" on stockpiling goods for Tet but is waiting for market changes to consider importing goods.
Due to slow sales, Ms. Duong Thi Tham did not dare to stockpile large quantities of goods like previous years.
Ms. Tham shared: “Around this time many years ago, Tet goods filled the shelves and filled the house. In recent years, the system of stores and mini supermarkets opened everywhere, the purchasing power at traditional markets has decreased sharply. Customers are mainly regular customers but also gradually decreased. Last Tet, I had more than 50 boxes of candy unsold. This year, seeing that the market is more difficult, I only took a few samples of each type of product to introduce to buyers and did not dare to "hold the goods". Tet goods have many seasonal items, short shelf life or after Tet will be very difficult to sell, so I will calculate to import the right quantity to meet market demand, avoiding unsold goods like last year".
Meanwhile, inside the two-story market, many traders are also sad as Tet is approaching but the consumption of goods has not increased significantly compared to normal days.
Clothing stalls at Ha Tinh City market have only a few shoppers.
Mr. Hoang Minh Hung - a merchant selling men's clothing on the 2nd floor of the Ha Tinh City market shared: "My wife and I rent 7 kiosks in the market to sell clothes, so the cost of the stall and tax is quite high. Normally, the end of the year is the peak shopping season, but at this time, even though it is close to Tet, customers are only sparse. Part of the reason is that this winter, the weather has not had many cold spells, so people's shopping needs have decreased. We are waiting for the days before Tet to see if the situation will improve."
With about 1,800 stalls and more than 2,200 business households, Ha Tinh City Market is the place with the largest number of business households in the whole province. Many traders selling household goods, confectionery, shoes, clothes, etc. here commented that at this time in previous years, goods were imported in large quantities, but this year, purchasing power is slow, so many stall owners are hesitant and cautious in importing Tet goods. Traders still import new goods with diverse designs, but the amount of goods in reserve is not much, only taking enough to sell, importing goods as customers buy.
Many traders in Ha Tinh City market still import goods with many designs but do not dare to "hold" large quantities of goods.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thang Long - Head of Ha Tinh City Market Management Board, in recent years, due to difficulties in trading at traditional markets, many traders have stopped selling, so the number of stalls closed is also quite large. This year, the economy is difficult, and the purchasing power for Tet goods is less vibrant. Normally, in the 12th lunar month, traders will import a larger source of goods, but according to forecasts, this year will be less than many previous years.
“As a large-scale market with many product lines and a large number of stalls, to ensure safety and convenience for people shopping and traders trading during Tet, the market management board will strengthen security and order, fire prevention and fighting, through the loudspeaker system and directly inspect and remind traders to turn off electrical equipment when leaving,” Mr. Long added.
