Thai football faces the risk of being banned by FIFA

Because there is a suspicion that the president of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) had to resign due to interference from other agencies, in this case the Thai Olympic Committee, headed by Mr. Prawit, who is also the current deputy prime minister of this country. Prawit is an influential figure in the land of golden temples. He used to be the Chief of General Staff of the Royal Thai Army.

In their analysis after the FAT leadership change, major Thai newspapers all acknowledged the risk of receiving a penalty from FIFA, which is what Asian countries like Indonesia and Kuwait have suffered due to interference in their football federations.

Matichon newspaper wrote: “The resignation of the FAT president at the behest of other agencies could lead to FIFA issuing a ban on Thailand. This is considered an act of government interference in the work of the Football Association.”

Thairath newspaper also cited Article 19 of the "FIFA Statutes" which stipulates the independence of the Football Association and the board of directors. And they concluded that it is very likely that FAT violated FIFA regulations.

The incident in Thailand's football village is quite similar to what Indonesia experienced in 2015. At that time, the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports (an agency with a role equivalent to the Thai Olympic Committee) intervened in the work of the Indonesian Football Federation. As a result, football in the archipelago was banned for nearly a year.

In general, the situation in Thai football is quite chaotic. FAT will report to AFF, AFC, FIFA about its unexpected change. Meanwhile, according to the media of this country, FAT will have 90 days to elect a new leadership board.
