Born and raised in a land with a tradition of crafting agarwood from the Aquilaria tree, Duc and Hien learned and acquired a lot of crafting experience from their local predecessors. Therefore, in 2020 and 2024, after completing their military service in the 3rd Army Corps (stationed in Binh Dinh province) and returning to their hometown, these two young men chose this profession to start a business.

Returning to their hometown, receiving financial support for demobilized soldiers, in 2023, Hien and Duc discussed contributing capital and connected with the Commune Youth Union to borrow an additional 200 million VND from the Social Policy Bank to open a bonsai workshop.
In the early days of opening the workshop, the two brothers had many advantages because the local source of agarwood materials was quite abundant. However, they also encountered difficulties because most of the local agarwood processing facilities already had a stable customer base, making it difficult to compete.

To make the product more accessible to new customers, Duc and Hien came up with the idea of making decorative night lights using agarwood.
“This product is environmentally friendly. When the light is turned on, the heat emitted from the bulb will cause the agarwood to secrete essential oils and emit a fragrance that brings a feeling of relaxation during sleep to the user and brings luck,” Mr. Duc shared.

After one year of operation, Duc and Hien's manufacturing facility has produced hundreds of large and small night lights with many different shapes. Each product is sold at prices ranging from 2 to 10 million VND, depending on the design and size. Customers consume the products in provinces and cities such as Quang Nam, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City... The initial income brought the two brothers about 10 million VND/month.
Along with production, Duc and Hien also actively promote products through social media channels, trade fairs... and attract a relatively stable market share.
“When providing products to customers, we instruct on how to use them and commit to a 1-year warranty to increase reliability,” said Mr. Hien.

Mr. Duc added that currently, his facility also makes bonsai products from agarwood. This is also a new product that has not been developed locally and is selling quite well.
“Hien and I learned how to make bonsai from zinc wire and copper wire in the military environment and from there we became interested in this type of art. Currently, the two brothers still regularly update their knowledge of bonsai shaping through books, newspapers, and social networks to create beautiful and unique products. This product requires the craftsman to be meticulous, have aesthetic sense and grasp the tastes of customers,” said Mr. Duc.

Mr. Hien did not hesitate to share about future plans, we will continue to develop the craft of making agarwood, making many new products, meeting the needs of customers. We will complete the documents to bring the product to participate in OCOP to affirm the brand and expand the market.

Mr. Mai Van Dan - Secretary of the Youth Union of Tien My commune said that in the locality, there are many young people who have started businesses from traditional products and have been successful. Hien and Duc are two young people who grew up in the military environment and together started a business in the profession of making agarwood bonsai but have shown quite a lot of promise.
“The commune Youth Union always actively helps youth union members access loans and administrative procedures to develop their products. In addition, the commune Youth Union will connect product consumption, guide and promote to help the product spread and introduce other youth to learn and follow,” said Mr. Dan.
