Mr. Tran said the job was high-risk, involving swapping a fake ring for a diamond ring from Singapore-based Tiffany & Co. Mr. Ngo agreed, although Mr. Tran would not say how much money he would make from the deal.
On November 20, Mr. Ngo went to the Tiffany & Co jewelry store at Marina Bay Sands (Singapore) and tried to exchange a diamond ring worth 318,000 SGD (more than 5.8 billion VND) for a fake ring, but he did not have time to leave the store before being discovered by an employee.
